If you found a wallet loaded with cash, what would you do?

Just imagine walking down to your local shops then finding a wallet that has around $350 dollars cash, 2 credit cards and a drivers licence in there, with the persons address and phone number.

What would the first thing you do be?

I was just thinking about this myself, after getting a new wallet and putting a reasonable amount of money in there. There are 3 things that could happen in this scenario.

1. You keep the wallet, and everything in there.
2. You take the cash, but return the wallet.
3. You give the wallet back, with everything in there.

I don't know what I would do in this situation. I would either choose number 3 or number 2. But I would most likely go with number 3. But I just want to do a poll to find out how much percent of people are honest. This isn't for school or anything, this is just something I want to find out for myself.

So please vote on the poll, and post why you would choose that option.

Life is short.. its really not that much money in the grand scheme of things... I give it back, its a pain in the ass to replace driver license, insurance, credit cards ect..

But that person could be in trouble (financially) and could really need that money

This is actually a hard question.
Without thinking, normally, I'd choose scenario #1.
But when I put more thought into it, it is impossible for you to know what position they are in financially and such so I would most likely choose #3.

I'd honestly hand it in, maybe I'll get a finder's fee.

I would take the cassh and the wallet.. Cause you cant just take the money and return the wallet...

True. It is either #1 or #3.
If you take the cash, they will obviously accuse you of taking it and you would have to go through a bunch of stuff.

Had to go with take cash and return wallet. Since it's not on their possession, it is legal. I could use $350 to go towards medical bills, or make sure rent will get payed.

Person probably has their social security card in there too, a lot of people tend to for some reason. Could commit fraud with the cards, but chances are that would catch up with me.

If it happened to me, I wouldn't be pleased the money was gone, but I would assume my money will get stolen the second I realize my wallet is gone. Better to get some back than none back.

I'd either leave it at their house in the dark of the night. I could drop it after getting the money, but that's a chance of putting it into the hands of someone who will trash their credit.

Not quite true, you could lie and say that you found it with no money in it... which would make option 1.5 - take money and drop wallet -

I personally would return it all... no in the grand scheme it is not that much... also, I would want someone to return all that was in it if I had lost my wallet.

I'd return it. I try my best to love others unconditionally and help them when I can.

My mums sister lost her wallet a few years ago, when the guy returned it he said that he "found it but there wasn't any money inside" ... we all knew that he took it but we just thanked him on returning the wallet.

My head would probably go for option 3 but my heart would go for option 2 ... but I would most likely go for number 3

I think people know if there was money inside their wallet, so taking it out is not that smart. But people are usually happy enough that they have their credentials etc. back.

I'd give it back with the money and everything in it, because its doing the other person a good favour. On schoolies (holiday after finishing last year of high school, basically 2 week party at the beach with mates) I lost my wallet with $300 cash on the third day. The next morning my parents called me and said the police local to where I was had my wallet, so I went and picked it up. Had all my cash and cards etc, was a big relief to get it back. The person found on the beach, handed it in to the local police station, police looked up my details on their system from my student card, called my home phone, parents called my mobile, I picked it up from station.

The reason they had my details on their system was because I handed in a womans purse I found on a tram once (had no money but had license credit card etc, the police officer said thats common cause the theif steals it, takes the money then dumps it) and left my name, phone number and address to get something good on my record in case bad stuff happens later, and to do the favour. So basically because I did a good deed, I was saved from losing $300 and having a ruined holiday.

I would give it back. I had a similar thing to Kz.

Take cash, no doubt.

I personally believe in Karma so I would give it back with everything inside. Maybe the owner will give me a finder's fee. If not that is alright because Karma will come through in the long run.

Option 2

I would have definitely returned it because it has to much valuable thing inside. I would probably imagine myself in the losing a wallet situation. That must be a pretty bad feeling :P

I would take the cash, maybe return the rest if the wallet has little/no other contents and/or is a pretty ugly wallet.

Hell, some people actually need the money more than others.
Besides, I live in Norway. Most people here don't need as much as they earn.

I picked option 1, I wouldn't take money out and return it, I'd let someone else return it with no money. I have had stuff stolen before, and I'm sure most to everyone here has, so why not do it back? heck, I bet the person losing the wallet even stole before, so you're just the person giving them the bad karma back :p

shit happens, you lose money and you find money, so why not take it when you find it? it helps balance it out so you're not just always losing money lol.

But if he didn't do anything bad then the bad karma would go to YOU for stealing ... something you should think about. Maybe later on you might lose your wallet or you might get robbed or just have bad luck

I answered option 1, because I didn't read the topic about there being identification inside of it and stuff. If I found some randoms wallet with money in it without any connections to anything its as good as mine.

Well, it's a sticky situation.

1) They have obvious ID in their wallet that will make it easy for me to return -> I return, maybe take out a few bucks for my effort.

2) No ID, no way to know for sure who owns it -> I take it.

I'd return the wallet but keep the money as a "thanks" for my service.

But they could give you a cash reward ...

I returned a wallet before. Of the $100 and id inside, I took none, but received $20 as reward :).

I'd take the money, but give him the wallet back. Or mail it.

You guys aren't considering the flip-side: what if the guy is really well off financially?

I once returned a guys wallet with 50 bucks in it and he gave me 100 in return. Also I think you just feel better if you return the whole thing, it's not like you would have had that money 30 seconds before you found the wallet, so your day hasn't changed all that much.

That's plausible, because if they have a drivers license, those little plastic cards, etc. in there they will be happy enough to have those valuables back.

Im keeping it all and if it's a quality leather wallet, im replacing my current one with it.

If there is ids and shit i'll return it.
If there is no way for me to find original owner, screw it, keep GP for my self. Because If i can't even find the person, might aswell..
