Hey guys I just wanna make a semi-good semi-cheap gaming computer that is ready for future upgrades. I know that I can make this a lot better by spending more money but anywho I would just like you guys to take a look at what I have and make sure that it all goes together ;) Thanks.

Also about OS's I was thinking about buying Windows 7. Can I just stick the CD in the OD when its all setup and install win7 and then it'll be good to go? Or am I missing sometime?

I'd use Ubuntu for the OS, but if you want, Win7 is quite nice, in my opinion. It's much sleeker and faster than Vista/XP. I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and I've never had troubles. I don't see why you have to buy Win7, though.. ;)

the heatsinks on the northbridge and stuff are cool looking on the mobo.
Looks like you got a pretty solid system there, of course I'm not hip with lingo and modern specs anymore. I'm sure someone will come in and say "blah blah AMD, blah blah Intel is better"

Make sure you do the rebates right after you thoroughly test everything.

edit: you might be able to save some money if you can find a mobo without integrated video.

Whats a mobo? lol And my friend was actually talking about AMD and Intel and he thinks AMD is the way to go but we'll see :)

if your mobo (google it...motherboard) has video out, it has integrated video... (right?)

But you won't even be using it, I'm sure you won't notice it on performance (might sap some mobo current), but it might be cheaper to find one without it. maybe.

E: there is no advantage to having an integrated and a dedicated one (that I know of), but there are some advantages to have 2 dedicated vid cards.

Ohhh I see. And this might seem REALLY dumb but is there anyway to boot a computer without an OS and access the internet in order for me to get an OS? Or how would that work?

nope, need OS to do anything cept change BIOS.
You could DL a linux live CD on the computer you're on and burn and be pretty set

64bit windows is inferior to 32bit, do some research on this topic, 64bit is not as good as 32bit in the eyes of many people.

and btw, Intel's new I5 and I7 processors are superior to most other processors out there, I would highly recommend this over the AMD, I5 will definitely be enough for your need but if you can afford it, buy the I7. (#Ghz does NOT matter as much as people think. In fact, most of the speed and power of a processor comes from how it is built and what technology is being used to make it. # Does not mean ANYTHING!!! I cannot stress this enough).

AMD has a VIABLE UPGRADE PATH.

I turned into an AMD fanboy when I got screwed with a high end C2D mobo that won't run any quad core procs.

you're dad is old, everything is shifting to 64 bit now...hell, while we're at it lets head back to betamax and 8 bit!
Manufacturers are making 64 bit drivers much more available (I noticed the prob when I hit Vistax64, never on Win 7 x64)

it is hard to find an up-to-date article on the subject (very time sensitive), I'll look a little more later when you come back to tell me more stuff your dad told you :)

Getting a Radeon 5770 or 5750 will help with playing games like GTA 4 or Crysis.

I built my gaming rig with only 550 bucks and it included a 580W psu and that 5750. (Including 4gb ddr3 ram).\

It runs nearly most games at 80 fps.

In regards to the OP, I'd change that crappy PSU for a OCZ or Seasonic PSU and change your CPU from a 550 to a 555 BE. I assume you are going to try and unlock the cores?

GPU-wise is up for debate. A 5750 will give you more performance but the 4850 is cheaper. Both are good cards though of course.

also, the peice of the comp u want to spend the most on is the motherboard. everything new that comes out will be for the newest motherboards. if ur board isnt new, then ur stuck as an old timer and u will need to replace your whole motherboard and then the amazing graphics card u wanted or that sexy whatever it is that that you wanted

No, there is very little reason why you would want to spend more then 90-110$ on a mobo for a mainstream computer. As of right now the mobo's that have USB3 and SATA3 will set you back 130$+. You will never use the bandwidth of SATA2 unless you have two mainstream SSD's raided together, or one enthusiast SSD which both would cost more than the mobo.

Nothing uses USB3 yet (afaik). Only time when spending a lot on a mobo should be a consideration is when you are going to run a multiple GPU setup, in which case you bleed money and it doesn't matter.

Honestly man, why not spend the extra 100USD and go for a processor that will last you a A LOT longer.

Actually, that really isn't correct. 32 bit apps on a 64 bit os will run slower because of the emulation the OS must perform to run them. There are additional reason why 32 bit runs faster, but this is generally the biggest issue. In actual use though, the difference isn't big enough to outweigh the benefits of having more RAM.

Because it's slower and every application but those that are heavily multithreaded (video transcoding, 3d rendering) will see a speed decrease. (then again, check the benchmarks, 'turbo boost' may make up the difference..)
