old :p
Dont get it :s
AAH lol nice nice.
Haha, I didn't get it for a minute there. . I had not seen that one before... seen similar (jokes) though
I know it's old, the reason I'm posting is because I find it funny my phone will support flash fully in less than 2 weeks while the new iphone that hasn't even come out yet will never support flash same with the ipad :)
You would make use of flash on your phone to do what, exactly?
I've been trying to decide which phone to buy in a month, but I can't seem to think of major reasons that would make me need flash
It's a phone. You're supposed to use computers to look at websites.
The sad thing is in fact that flash s*cks *ss as a whole though. Surely, it is a miss when your phone doesn't support it, but we would be better off by not having it all together.
I disagree kinda. My phone (N900) is just like a computer, but I can carry it with me more easily and the battery lasts much longer. I coded some Simba stuff on it. I often use it to view websites. It supports flash and as much as I hate flash, it is used way too often to simply ignore it.
I know flash sucks, but lets face it.. there's too many dam things now a days that require it. And shit, if you're going to spend all that money for a smart phone why would you want one that can't handle flash? Much less a small over priced touchscreen laptop or a gargantuan version of the ipod touch which can't either.
All in all, sucks to be a mac.
But what specifically? Only major things I can think of....
- Video
- Games
- Sports score updates/News updates (the ticker things)
You wouldn't be watching videos on your phone all that often, and if you do, 90% of the time it's going to be Youtube which the iPhone has a custom made app for. If you're looking for more games, playing games meant for a computer with a phone probably won't work out so well - you're better off going for the larger market of games meant specifically for your phone, which would be the iPhone. And then sports, there's an app for that. With multi tasking in the iPhone 4 it won't be any harder to go to another app than open another website, not to mention the app will be custom made for the phone.
Personally, those are the only uses I could see myself using flash for, but the iPhone compensates for them all (arguably provides a better alternative, but that'd be an opinion). What did I miss?
A *lot* of sites use flash for their main page as well.
Your point at custom app: The problem is that youtube is just *one* site, and there are literally thousands of other video sites. There lies the problem. Apple allows the users to watch the most required and wanted video site (youtube), but drops all the others. This is exactly why you don't want Apple to become ANY bigger... They are a direct treat to our freedom. (In this case freedom of choice) Apply doesn't even allow other apps for (some) other sites.
The whole point of flash was to create ONE application that ``does it all'', and they succeeded in that. Writing an app for every site that uses flash would be ridiculous, and a direct attempt to reverse all that. I don't think that's the way to get rid of flash.
A lot of sites use it on their main page to do what exactly?
If it was a computer not supporting flash (and in turn thousands of video sites, etc), then I'd get it. But it's a phone. I'm not going to go browsing through several video sites during my free time on my phone; Youtube is enough (along with the apps that likely exist for other fairly large video sites).
According to Jobs, he doesn't want flash because it is "proprietary, unreliable and not secure, and its performance drains battery life." He doesn't want to get rid of it by making an app for every flash site, but rather he "supports open standards on the Web, including HTML5, CSS and JavaScript." If anything, to me it seems his hope only extends our freedom rather than limits it.
Apple doesn't support flash because they want more money, like the reason there is no insurance on the iphone.
No, youtube is not enough if you want an open web and free world. Phone's are slowly becoming computers, small portable ones, but still. They're moving towards computers more and more. Even more reasons to do support flash, even though it sucks.
Do you honestly believe that cr*p? Sure, Flash eats CPU, but the rest is kinda bull.
Pot, meet kettle!
Apple is worse when it comes to proprietary code, believe me. Jobs is very canting there. ( http://apple.slashdot.org/story/10/0...ughts-On-Flash )
Apple does not support open standards at ALL. They don't support WebM, they don't support Theora, they don't support Vorbis, they don't stick to the proper HTML5 standards... What more is there for the open web?

May I ask what this discussion is about? If you know you want flash, you don't buy Apple? Or is this about how evil Apple is?
I find it funny how everyone talks shit about flash, but whats to stop people from making crappy HTML5 code? Flash applications aren't as bad as people make them out to be if they aren't programmed by a horrible programmer.
It is like those flash ads that take up 100% of your CPU to display some animation and count how many times you click to win X prize. Sure there is no reason why that ad should use up 100% of your CPU, but is it flashes fault? I can create horrible code in any other interpreted language that runs just as crappy.
What makes you think moving towards HTML5 will change the fact that 98% of the people don't program for efficiency because hardware has become so advanced now?
Well in that case, notify all the current phone manufacturers and tell them to stop advertising there phones as such.
But really, were all different. Times are different now. Its fun to have a a phone that is able to play cool games, calculator, internet, and music when your away from a computer.
Right now I consider all the new phones as Gadgets that have the ability to make and receive calls.
HTML5 isn't about efficiency, honey.. It's pretty impossible to program HTML that would be a heavy load on coputer hardware; HTML5 is more about altering coding standards so that the process of creating and reading the source of a website is simplified. With this said, "efficiency" regarding this topic refers to coding standards.
And, I'm with Wizzup on this one. Phones are indeed advancing into becoming PDAs with a calling functionality/SmartPhones. Those of you who cannot see that, seem to have no use for it; no offense, but I think that is so due to your young age. It is inevitable that a persons requirements for functionality grows with the person himself.
I have to disagree, if you want a phone don't buy an andriod or iphone it's a huge waste of money, instead get a basic phone that can call/text. Makes no sense to have an all in one smart phone with flash limitations simply because the manufacturer likes to buttrape their customers. Same could be said with the iTampon
But what else are you going to do on it? Coding for Simba? on an n900 that looks pretty horrible. Games? buy a dingoo. web browsing? I've never ever NEEDed to browse the internet on my phone nor have i wanted to.
I went on a trip to England with other students to visit the universities of Cambridge, London and Oxford, and I also had a project that had to be nearly finished when I got home. A fellow student who is also in my group had the phone too, and together with git we actually did most of the project (coding and testing) on our phones, in that week. (We had to travel by bus a lot)
Someone somewhere said that phones are just phones. I would have to strongly disagree. (I'm sure there are better phones, this is just one that I like the sounds of,) Take the HTC Incredible, for example. It has 800MB of RAM, and a 1GHz processor (along with other impressive things). To me, having a 1GHz processor with 800MB of RAM in my pocket, a touch screen, an eight MP camera (it may be 5MP), and (I think) multitasking, all in my pocket, is quite impressive.
tl;dr, phones are not "just" phones anymore.
If you want android and htc sense, its nice. Although its the first 4g phone in america, I would wait. It has loads of bugs and exploits that are yet to be patched. It has a capacitive screen which means it requires electrical current. some of the units do not have proper grounding which means the screen will not properly work if you are not touching another part of the phone at the same time.
Some of the units also have bugs with the sdcard slot. I think an ota patch may have been released though.
Dont forget the extra 10USD/month on top of the normal smartphone contract as a result of 4g.
The Samsung Galaxy S is also coming to sprint soon. It has a slightly smaller screen but a humming-bird gpu. I think it produces 50k polygons a second? Something like that.
Tbh, the smartphone market is moving _way_ too rapidly to make a purchase that wont be outdated within the next 2 - 6 months.
I believe motorola is releasing a phone by hte end of the year with a 2GHz processor.
Might edit this post later.
I don't particularly care how powerful it is. It sucks for real gaming because its touch screened. Lets say I got that phone. I don't have an internet plan for my phone because that's like $30 per month. Not that I would want to use the internet on my phone anyway, but I can't do that either. Now what is there left for me to do? Take pictures, maybe some video, and call people. Why does it particularly matter, then that its so powerful. I doubt that I'll ever want something as such until they come out with a really thin version of the Pandora that I can use as a phone too.
First of all, you seem to be implying that you only need powerful devices for gaming. Secondly, you don't want internet on your phone? Ha. Why would you want internet on your computer but not on your phone - if it as capable as a computer when it comes to browsing, writing emails, etc?
The problem here in the US is availability and price.
I just looked at TMobile-UK, and a Smartphone plan is _half_ as much as a Smartphone plan here in the US. TMobile-UK advertised a Smartphone plan at £20 a month, about 29USD. The price is double or triple that here in the US for an equivalent plan. For example, at verizon, you need to buy a voice package, then a texting package, then an internet package. The internet package itself is 30USD a month. I believe TMobile-US is the same price for an internet package.
As more and more internet heavy devices (such as the ipad) are released, the carriers are starting to change the plans from Unlimited internet plans to per MB, which will cost users more.
I just checked O2-UK, and unlimited texting on their network is £5 a month. In the US, unlimited texting can be from 15 - 30USD a month.
The entire wireless business in the US is a joke and a scam.
I'm implying that touch screen sucks for most gaming.
No I don't want internet on my phone. Its slower as far the internet goes, is slower as far as browsing goes (speed at which i can do things), its slower as far as speed/snappiness of the device goes, its slower as far as typing goes, its smaller, its less capable in terms of variety of things i can do, etc. Buy a laptop, they probably cost the same amount of money if you were to buy one of these phones without a plan.
