Knowing the best video card on the market won't really help you. It depends on your motherboard which card you can get. I prefer nvidia but that's just me.
I'm thinking this would be the best: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814500166
I was just saying. =P
Anyways: My computer doesn't have a pci 2.0 x16 slot... >.>
I have an hp pavilion a1637c. It only has 1 pci x16 slot, so I had to do what I could. For 50$ I bought an nvidia GeForce 8500GT with 512mb of ram on the card. I know it's far from good but it gets the job done. It can handle GTA 4. If you are looking to buy a card, find out what pci slots your mother board has. If you have a store bought computer(ie. dell, hp), you can google the name of your computer and you should be able to find the specs online. That's what I did.

...and no, I wasn't just looking at most expensive. The specs are =]
I don't like ATI.
PCIe x16?
LOL to that statement, they are not overpriced
If you want a good product that not overpriced go for ATI Radeon type card(soon to be called AMD Radeon).
your other choose is nVidia, i personally find these overpriced, but this is just all my opinion on the matter.
as for it depending on your motherboard, yes and no, as long as the connectors fit you will be fine, PCIe X16 PCIe X 8, they are all the same apart from speed X16 is faster
Wait for ATI's new card range to come out. (They're coming soon)
Then buy the previous range.
LOL just to let you guys know. My motherboard can probably handle it. It has 3 PCI Express slots. Its a Gigabyte 890FXA-UD5. And I have a six core processor :)
My friend has let me borrow his Nvidia GFX 460 and the ATI 5850 to see what brand I like better. So far I think that both brands are very good. I personally haven't been able to stress out either card to that max just playing video games. The only way is when I use my hacker that uses graphics card GPU to hack. I suggest not getting the XFX brand of ATI 5XXX series becuase there is a huge malfunction in the GPU's. When I got mine to test out I kept getting the infamous gray screen. As I looked around I found the hotfix that they produced. That didn't fix it. So I turned to a hardware problem. As me and my friend took it apart to take a look we found out that they had done the wiring wrong and the GPU wasn't working properly when trying to use 3D graphics. So far I'm leaning towards an ATI since they have a 2048 MB GDDR5 but I also may just go with the safe route and take the nVidia GFX 480 since I have had no problems what so ever with any of nVidia's products. The only thing that I found is that if you have an intergrated chipset that is two or more years old you will have some problems with compatibility of newer games.
I will let you know what I get today when I go over to his house and discuss the best options.
Also sorry for taking so long in my tutorial the reason its not finished is becuase I have been having problems like I said before the the ATI graphics card I was going to use in my tutorial. I am hoping to finish it this weekend complete with a video aid.
Thanks for you thoughts,

wtf is this jumboed pile of english?
First things first, if you couldn't notice the difference of performance between a 460 and a 5850 then you shouldn't worry about buying the most expensive GPU you can.
Secondly, I am not sure if it was your friends 5850 or if you had bought one. But as far as I know, the GSOD was fixed a looooong time ago. Only reason why you would be getting them is if a) your friend had bought one a long time ago or b) you got older stock. All you have to do is RMA it.
Thirdly, what wiring?
Furthermore, I do not like you are in any position to write a tutorial about what GPU is best. One, there is never a GPU that is outright best. You have to deal with bullshit such as some games working better with AMD and nvidia losing or vise versa. And not only that, a 500$ gaming GPU won't be the right choice for someone who wants a HTPC card. What if someone wants a low noise GPU? Low idle/load temperature/watts? I don't even know if you are talking about the 5970 or the 5870 2gb version. Two totally different things.
Not only that, with the new 6850 and 6870, theres really no reason to buy a 5970 since they crossfire magically well.
God, why even ask us if you are just going over to your friends house and just ask him.
PS: The 58xx series successor comes out in a month, so all your information you will have gained will be out of date anyway.
Shut up will you ? NVidia has shitty drivers, well you know what ? ATI almost has none.
I have 3 computers with ATI gfx cards, only shitty crashing retarded drivers available.
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/produ...tx_480_uk.html
Also, don't buy the UBEROMFGMEGA card today. It will cost tons, and be overkill for today's games. Then in a few months, another card, cheaper and better will come out.
This is /g/ all over it, ATI vs Nvidia.
What processor?
You mean the 'sli hack?' wtf are you talking about?
Another stfu. The 5000 series radeon cards all have that problem and its a driver issue, or a bios issue on the 5000 series cards. It is not limited to xfx.
lolol. That 5870 Asus card, the Ares, is a load of crap. A video card's performance does not completely on the amount of memory it has.
Disable the integrated grapics??
Please dont. I dont think you have the knowledge to write a tutorial on this subject. Maybe you mean this thread?
Please read up before making any sort of biased, incorrect decision. Sorry, I'm not trying to be mean or anything, just :|
Also, the radeon 6000 series came out today :D
Yes stfu. ATI is notorious for horrible driver support. Keep it in your pants and dont random flame without any knowledge.
everyone seems to not like ATI :( i quite like there cards, but then again i dont use the drivers they provide i use tuned drivers so that must be why i dont mind them
what nVidia cards would you recommend? i have had one before and after a year it blew up on me ,not literal, i just get a messed up screen which is unusable its basically static mixed in with bit of color.
i am looking for something around £200 give or take 20.
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/produ...tx-460-uk.html is amazing price / quality wise.
Alot less than £200 too (some models).
Also, about that which Wizzup? said, it's a good tip knowing most of the 5xxx series' prices will lower. Do know, however, that the 6xxx series has some budget cards with great price / quality relation ;). Big problem though : ATI.
Call me nvidiafag if you will.
To be fair ATI drivers have gotten much better. Nvidia as a whole is stagnating but, yes you could argue they still have better drivers.
However, Dervish you seem to forget the 196.75 drivers. Lets leave the fanboyism aside - both companies are capable of releasing good drivers, and bad ones.
And now as far as performance/price goes I cannot outright recommend the GTX 460 anymore, as the 6850 and 6870 perform as good or better then their respective price brackets. (6850 vs 460 768mb ver, 6870 vs 1gb 460). Well, to be fair the 460 is a little cheaper then the 6870 by about 20$ so it falls in another budget, but it won't beat the 6870 unless you overclock by a good 15-20%. Getting such a high overclock isn't guaranteed. (though to be fair, the 460's are really good overclockers).
As far as I have seen the 68xx series don't overclock that well, but the weak overclocks level out the playing field the massive overclocking abilities the 460 has.
I just purchased a GTX 460 768mb, solely for CUDA. Double the performance of my old 512mb 8800 GTS and overclocks like a beast.
yeh i know ATI have there new cards coming out, which i am looking forward to the seem quite nice.
i dont mind if you like nVidia, seeing as i love ATI, i have just always had better performance and quality from ATI and for much less. but this is why i want some more info from you guys that like nVidia about whats good and whats not.
i will take a look at what you recommended thanks.
I got a computer running a 5750, and another running crossfired 5750's.
They've given me sometrouble getting new drivers, but performance wise they beat Nvidia's cards... I'd go thru the trouble with drivers (WHICH IS NOT ALL THE TIME) to get premium performance.
Actually, the ATI drivers on Linux still suck. But I guess they're fine on Windows. Nvidia drivers on Linux work so much better than the ATI ones.
Also, ATI cards dying? Doesn't anyone recall the nvidia series (forgot the number atm) massively dying after one year?
It can't be the 8xxx series. Mines been running great for over 2 years now.
For your money, nothing beats the 8800 models
8800 GTS 512mb
And yes, I know they're out of production. But they're still awesome!
My old 8800 has roughly 3/5 the CUDA performance of my GTX 260
If you want a cheap reliable card go for the GT220 .
Unless you buy one used for really cheap, there is no reason to buy a GT220 anymore. You can buy a 430 for the same price and the 430 is only like twice the performance. Only.
Yeah, and how many consumer applications does CUDA have?
There are cases when it is a good idea.... few.. but still. Although you are correct. Don't go with used. Buy new for tech equip.
I don't know bro. If my friend phoned me up and asked if I wanted to buy a used a 5970 for half price I wouldn't hesitate on that. But I don't know how your friends treat their stuff, so...
Likewise if I were to buy used stuff from a store and all looked fine and dandy I wouldn't care either. Just make sure you don't look like a moron and they won't try to handle your ass. You buy a stick of RAM, it has errors and you bring it back. Tell them you did a memtest overnight and its borked, what are they gonna do? Refuse a refund?
Only thing I wouldn't buy used would be a hard drive.
Buying stuff from friends and being used hardware online/stores/wherever are two entirely different things.
