U.K. Game Publisher Jagex Lands New Funding

Cambridge, England - Jagex, a U.K.-based online game developer and publisher, announced on Tuesday that it has raised an undisclosed amount of new funding from Insight Venture Partners, Spectrum Equity Investors and The Raine Group.

Founded in 2001, Cambridge, England-based Jagex operates titles including its flagship "RuneScape," a massively multiplayer online game, as well as a range of third-party titles.

The company will use the funds to accelerate growth of its development and publishing capabilities.






They could put it all into macro detecting/bot

Interesting... Highly doubt they'll do anything for macro detecting, most likely give most of it to staff as a bonus and use the a good portion on advertisement, then a lil for graphic design or a new engine or something...

No, I think they will use a part of it for that but the large portion I think will go to setting a larger foothold on MMORPG market and on smartphone client development.

RuneScape wouldn't be right on a phone. I really don't see it happening. Besides, the java would be too heavy on a phone... it would probably eat up it's battery in < 1 hour. And they won't rewrite in another language with different graphics, because 1) they don't want people to have different gaming experiences and 2) it's simply too much work for not enough return.

I could see them spending this money to either advertise or develop the game faster.

They have made mention of wishful thinking @ smartphone platforms in the past... not too long ago either if memory serves me well.

Hm like I said, I don't see them putting the full game on the phone. It would be cool if you could manage ge offers if your player is anywhere in the GE, though!

I could definitely see it running natively on mobile devices in the near future, at least on iPad if not phones at this point.

Interesting, it seems they really need the money.
Combine that with the latest updates and I really got the feeling things aren't going that well @ Jagex HQ. I mean, Runescape isn't growing that much and their latest MMO got cancelled and then reincarnated. For now, we know nothing and I doubt they do know themselves. Also Funorb seems like a costly loss. The last update on the website was somewhere well in September which already is five months ago.
I wonder, is Jagex actually profitable atm?

Well, it's really not that surprising Jagex has been doing the things they have been lately.

i.e. Giving back free trade/staking/wilderness and the profanity filter.

Runescape, at the current rate (or at least the rate from 12 months ago) can not compete in the world of gaming for much longer.

The people who run runescape realize this, and in order to save the company they are taking action now while they still have a lot of time before their company goes under to reach out to its players with popularity and appeal to keep the money flow gears turning until they can come up with a permanent solution to their potential future economic collapse, at which point they will become the stingy asshole do-whatever-they-feel-like-fuck-the-customer-company they have been the last three years.

They might put SOME into macro detection, just not a lot

Looking at the number of botters, i would say they should really do something about their macro detection because it sucks terribly.

Probably a large % of their player base are bots.

They are more apt to ban all the F2P ones but would probably be alot more lenient on the P2P ones' unless they are pure abusing the game.

Well, as a botter i would say that too, but as a legit player I'd say they should, cos whenever i try to play legit all the bots piss me off so bad because I can't even do most stuff. RS will most likely be a pure botting game in the future if they don't do something soon.

Even though they are getting money from people with members, I still don't think that Jagex will allow them to macro. I think they have the same system in place for every user, regardless of whether they are F2P or P2P.

Why won't they be lenient to P2P botters? After all jagex is a business first, and if they ban the p2p bots, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot.

Nope, because then it brings back the issue of real world traders (which was why free trade was abolished from runescape in the first place). Jagex will see a botter and do something about it. Not go "Hey look there is a botter ... but wait a minute he is paying to play this game. Lets just let him keep on cheating."

I do not think that happens, the same ban system is used on EVERY player, regardless of their status. If I recall correctly, Zeph use to be a P-Mod, he got caught cheating and they didn't let him slide.

If they were smart they would just let the p2p people bot. At this point in time, it's the smartest thing to do with their game.

Perhaps they seek to develop the game further, out of the browser based game... Like a real cd and stuff :).

They're letting everybody bot, they don't even hand out bans anymore, just stat rollbacks :duh:
