I also had this idea awhile ago and actually had a go at implementing this.
The idea was similar, use the world map to get your current location and have my own tile system where I could map where my player was and work from that.
The issues I found is the world map now has random changes similar to how the mini map works.
These changes make it hard to do template matching even if you only use a allowed colour range. And these could easily make the world map change more and more like the mini map.
I think the only way we can do this is by working out where we are off the game screen. (Or have a know starting location inputted into our own tile system)
