Game server?
I've recently acquired a new server (srl will be hosted on it eventually). It costs only a bit more than the current SRL server and allows 15TB of bandwidth (limited after 15TB, no extra costs), in contrast to the current 500GB bandwidth allowed at this server (or so). It also has an i7 and 24GB ram. So I think it would perhaps be cool to run a game server. This idea has been brought up a few years ago, but then I decided I didn't have enough bandwidth to safely host a game server 24/7; I think that has changed now.

Suggestions for games? It'd be nice if they were cross platform or WINE compatible.
- Battlefield 1942 - my old favourite (not free, but extremely cheap)
- UT 2004 (not free)
- BZFlag ( free, http://bzflag.org/ )
- Warsow ( free, http://warsow.net )
- ...
Not going to make a poll yet, need some more games first.

TF2. Free to play, has Linux dedicated server software. Runs on Windows and OSX, works on WINE.

Also Sauerbraten, instagib.

Warsow looks neat. I've never played TF2, but it also looks good. I didn't know it was free to play or I'd probably have played it sooner.

Battlefield 1942 is my favorite game. It's incredible how much fun it still is. I have it and I would play :)

lol well thats the thing as decent or lame as some of those games sound, i guess we kinda have to be considerate of others' peoples machines' capabilities???? or do we? idk...sadly i havnt any ideas for games, and im questioning whether id actually be able to play...

i wana say some incredible minecraft server but tbh theres a gazillion of em and yet i havnt played a single one... ...idk 0.0 .....halo 1/2? can those even have private servers...ill just be quiet now..

Battlefield 1942 is fantastic. When I was in HS, our digital media class set up a private server in a closet (private, as in we didn't tell the principal or other teachers) (closet, as in book closet).

I also agree with Halo 1.

Easy to set up an awesome bukkit server with plugins, only uses maybe a GB of ram if you use Bukkit or Mineserver.

But then again, that's expensive.

Now how awesome would it not be if some geek made SMART compitable with private RS servers? Having a private RS server where developers could easily test and develope scripts without having the proper requirements (or guts) on real servers would be pretty sweet.

Oh, and if you absolutely must... Yeah, MineCraft is pretty sweet too.

BF3 is garbage and is has no dedicated server tool. I think Wizzup is just looking for stuff that has public server software that he can run himself ;)

I never said BF was garbage, just BF3 is. And I very much dislike COD.

dude im gonna assume ur vastly basing that on the beta. and thats just not fair. normally id say its ok, but the fact is, betas nowadays dont represnt games ....take crysis 2 for example...and thats the only example i got :redface:

Then they shouldn't release a beta if it's nowhere near the quality of their game? The same issues from BC2 still exist, still bad linear maps, terribly unbalanced and such. EA is garbage as well.

ha. well im assuming they had no choice. probably running out of time and budget. their investors pushin or pullin too much.

if by linear u mean borring, maybe but if u mean symetrical then i will argue how those are most ballanced.
