Make a deal on some money (good chunk more than you were scammed) and tell him he's never going to scam someone again. I don't care if that was his background but give him the benefit of the doubt.
If you decide to put him in jail- or even a criminal record, you are ruining his life forever. He won't be able to get insurance for any kind of decent price. He won't be able to get a job anywhere that provides substantial living wages. He will have to check up with police for the years to come. He will have his internet activity monitored for life. He won’t be able to buy a house (not that his job will allow it either). Have some sort of kindness... let the man live past his mistakes. Have the forgiveness of God.
I hear you all criticizing this man and saying that he should be punished and put in jail, but you don't realize how devastating that will be for this man. None of you have any idea how hard it is to go to jail, or how hard it is to stand up in front of a judge and confess your wrongs, how hard it is to live with what you did and the immense consequences that followed- YouTube it, Google it; you’ll get the same results about how hard all of the process and the system are/were. I actually quite pity this man right now because of all of you- none of you have any right to be pointing the finger at a man you don’t even know, you should all be ashamed of yourselves. What he did was wrong, but nobody is perfect. Please just give it some time and thought before you seal this man's fate...
