a Build help
Looking to build a desktop computer;
I know the items listed below are brand names, some are over priced, etc.

*Purpose of thread: help in suggesting equal performance, lower value parts / downgrading unnecessary specs/ overall build optimization

took out the first build, as it was horrible!

TTL Cost (site builder) := -----
TTL Cost (self ordering+building) := less, but not figured out yet
- I'm pretty sure (I think) that is all compatible;
- Don't know why I'd order an OS... when there's free OS (I can even get free windows os from multiple people)
- The CPU cooling concerns me, as it looks like a fly try to move boulder... :s
- I really want the CPU/RAM over anything (downgrading others as long as preformance maintains)
- I also know how to order factory direct, but builder websites help me know what works where (again I feel like they dump the overpriced brand names on you >.>).
AMD > NVIDIA? Heard that when programming/working with NVIDIA, you can get one-overed fast.
i7 Sandy Bridge-E > i7 Ivy Bridge? I could look into this too, heard about ivy being new, but never heard of sandy

I know builds come down to what you want yourself, but I am looking for suggestions to aid in my determination (the more the merry)

Advice / suggestions are helpful and greatly appreciated!

poor built (but fun) flash games, exploring the length of tumblr image feeds (I liked one posted on these forums kitties & _itties, but didn't get to the end :/ )

I found a laptop too (it's not available to public) that has a 128g ram, now that seems over the top :p

So you're getting a $500 graphics card to play flash games(Lmao)? A 300gb ssd isn't needed... get like a 16gb ssd + a 500gb hdd. 8gb ram will be fine for you. If you find (somehow) you need more ram, you could always order another 8 later. Get like an i5-2500(k)... not a $1000 processor that you won't even be fully using.

Save yourself 3 grand and take my advice.

Okay thanks for the advice; also, what type of stuff uses $1k processors? (I know playing rs won't take up near that much, but I get lost why those processors are listed for computer builds, like what would use that expensive processor to its full use?)

Honestly the only thing I can think of would be a server. Even resource intense tasks such as a bot farm could be done much more cost efficiently with an i7-2700k. With the processor price difference, you could literally build a second computer.

Oh wow, that's a really helpful explanation! I didn't know their benchmarks, let alone how to measure them like you did in the photo. Also makes sense that a server would need the higher/expensive cpu ^.^

I build my computer myself. Ordered every part from the cheapest site.
Paid something like 500€, that is 616$.

AND I AM LOVING IT.

Putting everything together is fun too :)

What you must know if you are going to use this for botting is to make a power efficient computer. You don't wanna spend 1000$ every year for letting your computer bot 24/7.
SSD is power efficient, make sure you have a good cooler, i think that also adds to power efficiency.

SSD is power efficient, make sure you have a good cooler, i think that also adds to power efficiency.

Best way to have a power efficient computer is to have a power efficient power supply. Getting a SSD over an HDD just for power reasons is not smart.

Drop the ram only really need 16gb, Upgrade power supply 1200watts, Water Cooling is way quite Corsair H100 is what I use, i7 3770k is all you really need lmao you buying a 3960X is like taking a shit on a Aston Martin.

Edit: The reason I say this because unless your running a 30person server for wow or mabey doing some video processing or maybe bio chemistry rendering reactions in real time, you wont need to use that processor, besides overclocking is a pain in the ass compared to the 3770k. What you really need to think about when you go that high (price wise) is noise. Now I built my computer using an amd fx 8150 (OC to 5.2ghz), Two gigabyte 7870's, 16gb, of ram, 1.2tb ssd pci express hardrive, antec H2O 920 water cooling, 1200watt powersupply, and the antec twelve hundred case. This mother was only 1.5k, and could probable do more than what you need.

64gb ram is overkill... 8gb is fine if you must 16 gb also works. that processor oh my god... i have a 990x just because i got it second hand. haha. i dont use it though :p i sold that and use my i7-870. uhm the 7970 is also overkill get a 6970 that will run everything you listed just fine, i play mw2 on ultra everything at 60 fps while recording (i lock it at 60, i may be able to go higher). my friend has a gtx 690 and its a beast but un needed haha. hope this helps!

Meh ddr3 ram is cheap, no point in limiting yourself to only 8gb... get at least 16gb. 32gb is great, that's what I go. (needed that much to bot diablo 3 proprely)
The video card is a bit weak if you compare it to the rest of the build.

Also if you are going to upgrade your video card, you should maybe consider getting a 1000w power supply so you've got some margin. Overtime, a power supply will produce less and less power.
Happened to me a few years ago. My computer worked fine for years, then I'd get blue screen. At first I though it was the graphics card, but in fact it was the powersupply that wasn't able to give enough juice to the graphics card.

$100 for a fan that you won't need because you don't sound like you'll be doing extreme stuff with your computer?. A $20-30 one will suffice. Again with that expensive processor.. Also SSDs are a waste unless you turn on your computer 100 times/day or do stuff with huge programs that take forever to load.

What will you be doing with your computer? Based on what your needs are I could tell you what to get.

If he wants to overclock, he's going to go through his CPU in a a couple years if he use a crappy 20$ fan. At that price you might as well keep the shit stock fan.

Well the first post was a crap build by me, which was nearly $5000 usd

But I posted further down, of a new build, roughly $1600, which should suffice for all my needs, I still have to work on compatibilty though, I saw what eska meant (they are compatible) but I'm looking for a little increase in power supply, and more opinions too :)

This build - I can install Windows 7 Ult. and then when it asks if I want to partition, I can do a Linux/Ubuntu partition too?

With the partition question mentioned above, can I partition both Operating Systems (which are Windows/Linux) to the SSD (which is my computers main hard drive), and then use the HHD drive (the secondary drive) to help both partitions (for example - speed up performance, or storing data)?

If I chose to get a smaller amount of RAM (Lets say 8gb), and install Windows 7 Ult. + Ubuntu Linux on to the operating system now, I can still switch out the RAM to higher (let's say 32gb) later? (I ask because Win 7 Prof/Ult can handle 16gb +, but Win 7 home prem can't)? - I guess a good question to accompany this is: Does Linux support me from the 8gb RAM now, then the 32gb RAM later? or would the transition cause problems?

Increasing your ram in the future shouldn't cause any OS problems. And unless you plan on running a bot farm, you will probably never need more than 8gb ram anyways.

Again with the SSD... you don't need a 120gb one. You don't even need one to begin with, it just has a faster transfer rate than a HDD. If you must get one, get a 32gb SSD. Enough for your OS, and any major programs you use that take a bit to load. There's no point in a 120gb SSD. Don't feel like explaining further- tl;dr get a 32gb SSD and only use it for your OS + big programs.

Oh and the case you plan on getting. Don't get it. You don't need a $200 case when a $50 case such as the haf 912 will fit everything perfectly well while still having good air flow. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...D=3938566&SID=

Oh and again for like the third time- I don't think you need that powerful of a graphics card + processor for tumblr, flash games, and a few smarts..

pretty bad power supply, you should build the system yourself.. it's far easier than any lego set is and I'm sure you're capable of building legos.. also most people have fun building it.

Linux will support up to like 1024GB of ram.. or something insane.. so you have nothing to worry about there.. microsoft puts ram caps because they're greedy, so get whatever OS supports the 32GB you want to maybe go to in the future, and you won't have ot worry about it (can switch it out anytime.. but powerdown the machine first)

For your graphics card, you'd get a identical performance & better overclock with a 7850 instead of an nvidia, unless you're going nvidia for some specific reason.. also it uses about half the wattage... also it's a bit cheaper

and that's a shitload of money on a board if you're not overclocking, case is also way overkill

also I wouldn't pay extra for an intel SSD that is using a sandforce controller.

Why are you getting an i7? You don't need it, get a 2.6 GHz i5 and you won't have any problems. I don't think you know how to overclock/need it either. Screw the SSD, and don't get more than 16 gigs of RAM because that's just a waste of money. I don't know much about power supplies so got no advice on that.
You can install Win7, and then load your linux distro from a live CD, and that will let you shrink the windows partition and create enough space for linux.

I'm just starting to understand on your comment Neb, about the SSD. I'm seeing that I don't need to waste so much money on them, and read/write speed is already dynamite good with the SSD 32gb, so 120gb would be overkill. (Also noticed that my HHD is already pretty decent, and since I'd get a HHD secondary drive, it won't matter space - wise) So I'll probably end up doing that.

The case to was a little 'iffy' for me.. I don't think I much care about the looks, as opposed to the air flow.. Taking the stuff apart isn't a concern either (a possible selling feature I guess they throw into cases)

So Linux is crazy for RAM, guess that's a good thing :) Lol @ Microsoft, and good to know I can swap later down the road.

The graphics card suggestion is interesting, will definitely check that out.
Edit ^ : There's a heck lot of 7850's lol, but the first result looked more expensive but more powerful. ( link = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150609 ) - All I did was search for 7850, so maybe a lower cost one would be better?

I'm positive I can get stuff overclocked, but I'll look more into that after I get the build. Plus the case is overkill I now see.

Don't know what the SSD sandforce thing is, but I'll look into that as it sounds interesting.
Edit ^: Yes, I have found a little out about it now: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SandForce#Issues It appears from the wiki, as well as certain forums, that it's not the best firmware, afaik / from what I've read.

It really does mean a lot to me, hearing the feedback, as even the most common knowledge to someone else, is news to me (and I love learning too so it's that much better)! I'll do some more research and try to post back with the findings!

^ lol, my bad, I gotcha on the SSD/HHD, typo'd probably for HHD/HDD. Also, I'll probably overkill the SSD just for future endeavors. The partition information too, is reassuring. I also updated this with a link I found on the SSD's, so I'll probably cop out of the intel SSD, and lower to a smaller gb and different brand. But I do want the experience of a SSD
