Default Why do some parents kiss their children on the mouth? is that normal?

    To me that's gross.
I have nothing against parents showing their children love and affection by kissing them on the cheeks or anywhere else but the mouth. Just seems like not normal.

What do you think about that?

My girlfriend and her parents do it, even her stepdad. I find it kind of weird, but we're all just brought up differently, I suppose.

This thread reminds me of a coalition that was against Spongebob, saying it promotes homosexuality because Spongebob held the hand of his guy friend Patrick, the pink star.

Now, I'm not saying that what you're doing is similar as I don't fully know your reasoning. It was just a funny reminder of this story. I'll simply ask you a few questions: Do you consider it "immoral"? What are the consequences for the child of being kissed on the mouth innocently?

Personally, I find a parent kissing his/her child on the mouth as "gross" as giving a bath, changing a diaper and breast-feeding (aka, not at all).

Having a particular background, I look at it through the prism of sexual aggression. A key component of this offence is the sexual connotation of the act. In this particular case, as long as there is no sexual connotation at all, I don't see what can be wrong about it.

It could be interesting if you elaborated on what makes you think it isn't "normal".

The portion you trailed off on could be many things....

I too think its solely on how you're raised. I don't see it as either acceptable or unacceptable but I would personally never do it. Forehead/cheek is endearing enough for me.

    inb4gravedig.

I find it to be completely normal.
I kiss my mom on the lips, and im a 20 year old man who still kisses his dad on the lips.

We still hug, shake hands.. But when it comes for me or them to leave for awhile or doing something dangerous, we kiss.

Everyone has a different family though, hell I thought it was normal until I read this thread.

I agree, its all in the upbringing(: I dont much care either way, I've always kissed my siblings on the forehead.

If you've seen the movie CLONE (mother cloning her deceased husband, acting as a mother until he's all grown up and then sleeping with him) ..now that's something I find wrong.
Kiss on the lips? I don't know, that's a culture thing. My parents never kissed me and I'm sort of happy about that.

I think it is something that parents do to their children when they are young. You never really see (or I don't anyway) a grown man kiss his mother on the lips (imagine kissing a grandma on the lips).

It comes with the upbringing but some people find it weird because kissing on the lips is supposed to be "intimate" for some people. Or at least our society tries to define it like that.

I don't even see why you're comparing this to that but whatever.

Reason I think it isn't normal is because when I'm kissing a girl I get a little aroused. Those who have had intercourse can understand what I'm refering to. To me kissing is sort of sexual. Now you can't compare a kiss on the lips with kiss on the cheek or forehead. It's NOT the same not to mention french kissing/making out. When I see a parent kissing their child, it just seems weird. Not that there is anything biologically wrong with that.

Clearly I'm not the only one who thinks this is weird. But I'd love to hear why others think that way. I've kinda explained why I do.

I'm not quite sure where you see me comparing the two. One just made me think of the other.

What if I suggest you that people kissing their kid on the mouth do not get aroused? Like I mentioned, I'm looking at it through a particular prism of sexual aggression which takes into consideration the connotation of the act. A tap on the ass, in many circumstances, is a sexual act, but it certainly isn't when a buddy just congratulate someone for scoring a goal. Hope you get the point. Not because something CAN be sexual that it always is else kids wouldn't get washed until they get do it by themselves...

Now, I'm not saying that people are awkward for finding it strange or weird. I personally wouldn't kiss my kid on the mouth. I just don't understand the need to take a moral stance over this.

Well obviously they don't. I'm just saying me personally, which is why I find it "weird". Not saying its an abomination just plain weird. I mean it looks like I'm not the only one who thinks that way, just wish others would share their views rather than saying "yea its weird" or "no its not". Gatta say I appreciate your answer.

I also have to say smacking a guy on the ass is weird too. If you want to congratulate then "high five" or hug. Slapping each other on the ass is just as odd. Again not saying its sexual, or a gay act. Can't explain why I find it odd its just something I wouldn't do or like to get from someone else.

    :/

I don't know anyone who is doing that, only saw it on TV in reality show from other countries. Maybe it is a country thing?
However, I could never imagine doing this to my parents, for me kissing on lips has something sexual. (Therefore werd if done with parents)

To come to the defence of US Marine, I believe it's a country / upbringing thing, where I am in the UK, almost every male son would kiss his mother on the lips to say goodbye or something, it just hasn't got the whole sexual vibe to it haha, I didn't realise it was so weird in the US

I honestly never even thought about this, but usually Mother and Grandmother are acceptable to kiss goodbye on the lips, but I've never seen a male kiss their Dad goodbye on the lips, Daughter's would though, and then if they also kiss their mother is optional I suppose because it's seen completely different from son-dad relationship lol,

God this thread remids me how different and weird we all are
