I don't understand the point of fasting. Seems like nothing but a lot of self-inflicted harm, which I generally try to avoid. Anyone care to enlighten me?

There's much more to it than refraining from eating, much more.
Lyrics gave me a good laugh though :P

I wouldn't say its self inflicted harm.
I'm not sure how I can enlighten you without mentioning a lot of background on the religion.

I enjoy fasting; feels great spiritually and physically. Its similar to Intermittent Fasting for bodybuilding which I follow as best as I can.

Some say people gain weight when they fast for 1 month; its very unlikely, however it all goes upon how much you eat before sunrise, what you do during the whole day, and how much you eat at sunset.

A lot of people lose weight/maintain their health consciousness during the period, again all on what the person eats and what they do during the day.

If it caused harm then there wouldn't be many Muslims.

Well of course but you misunderstand, harm != death, of course I know they don't kill themselves via starvation, but I can't understand how it's pleasant. Jake has helped me to understand a bit though

Same here, nearly everyone around me is fasting. According to my Muslim friend, you're not allowed to put anything in your mouth, which includes all food, drinks, even as much as gum and smoking as well. I heard there's exceptions for like medicine and what not but I'm not expert.

Yup, no water, no food from around 3 am till 8:30 pm. The timing changes every 2-3 days.

Maybe its different from my place here? Although the Malays are fasting now, they will set up stalls and sell various types of food when they're fasting.

The times of day they must fast depends on when the sun sets and rises. Here it's much easier for them, normally 4:00-18:00.

I am Muslim, and the video made me laugh IRL, haha thanks for the share! Must show my buddies. Also we open our fast at sunset with dates & water and pray right after; Than we return to the dinner table and let the feast begin. And yes many of us do get fat during ramadan since our families spoil us with delicious dishes; Since I body build, I like to munch anything I see down and try to hit at least 2800-3000 calories FUAARRRK! So after we eat, we go on and pray (about 1-2 hours later) at the mosque and than start our Ramadan night prayers (Taraweeh- A set of prayers that are done in Ramadan during the night). Most mosques get done with Taraweeh by midnight, therefore we go to sleep or whatever (I stay up all night eating, hookah, chilling with friends since it is Summer holidays here). Right before it is a must for a muslim during ramadan to wake up before sunrise, so they can start their fasting by eating/drinking (we tend to eat & drink a lot here so we can make it through the day), afterwards we have a set time (changes every day or couple days) and than we pray (Fajr) and viola! That is a typical day for a Muslim that is fasting during the month of Ramadan. Also we believe the satan is locked up during the month of Ramadan, so we all tend to be really close to the religion by praying all 5 prayers and reading the Quran and just being a better person; Also fun fact for the FIFA fans: Ozil & Benezema & many other players are known to be fasting during their games.

If any questions, feel free to ask away!

    Ramadan Kareem!
