    Default Antivirus Help

On my home computer, with windows vista, the vista virus defender recently said that I have 27 infected items on my computer, and that I need to buy the full version to get rid of them. I have mcafee installed, (I know mcafee isn't great) which says my computer is fine, but I can't even open a web browser on the home computer, because vista defender says its dangerous. I want to get a new anti-virus program from the web, but I can't open the browser.

Do I need to buy the full vista defender? $60 that I don't really want to spend..

I don't even know why you have Vista. Disable it (the defender or whatever) .

Vista Defender is a virus itself. It poses as an AV, and then says you need the premium version so whoever is behind it gets the money. Try getting rid of that, then get back to us.

    EDIT:
Vista Defender Pro is a rogue anti-spyware application from the same family as Vista AntiSpyware 2010. Once installed, it will display false system security threats and then will prompt you to buy a full version of this program to remove the threats which don’t even exist. The rogue program will display fake security alerts to convince you that your computer is badly infected. You should get rid of Vista Defender Pro virus as soon as possible. Read the removal instructions below.

Vista Defender Pro is a typical rogue security program. This security risk usually enters a computer with the help of Trojan viruses and other malicious programs. The rogue program is also promoted through the use of fake online anti-malware scanners, misleading site and etc. The fake scanners display pop-ups and warnings about serious computer problems, though your PC is actually clean.

While running, Vista Defender Pro will perform fake system scan and then state that your computer is infected with spyware, adware and Trojans. The scan results are false. This fake program will claim that you shuld purchase Vista Defender Pro to remove the infections. However, don’t buy it. It’s nothing more but a scam and obviously won’t clean your computer. To make things worse, this parasite will slow down your computer and hijack your Internet browsers. It will also block all found security programs and security related websites

If you find that your computer is infected with Vista Defender Pro, please use the removal instructions below to remove this scareware from your computer as soon as possible:

    1. Click Start->Run (or WinKey+R). Input: “command”. Press Enter or click OK.
    2. Type “notepad” and press Enter. Notepad will open.
    3. Copy and past the following text into Notepad:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClasses.exe]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClassessecfile]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTsecfile]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.exeshellopencommand]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTexefileshellopencommand]
    @=”"%1″ %*”

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.exe]
    @=”exefile”
    “Content Type”=”application/x-msdownload”

    4. Save file as “exefix.reg” (without quotation-marks) to your Desktop.
NOTE: choose Save as type: All files
    5. Double-click to open exefix.reg. Click “Yes” for Registry Editor prompt window.
    6. Download Spyware Doctor, update Spyware Doctor and run a full system scan.

im 99% sure the thing telling you to buy the full version is a fraud and is part of the actual virus.
I would use a combination of RKill and Malwarebytes(free) to clear it all up.
then i would install microsoft sercurity essentials(full version is free )
if you need/want help get Teamviewer (:
I get paid 25-30$/hr to help people with this shit haha

Any anti virus that you didn't install/buy yourself is a virus. There's Windows 2000 Pro or something that acts as a virus but is a virus, Vista Defender apparently, and a lot of other ones.

    Use Linux. Fawk bitches.

RKill kills processes that are malware. So you can properly run an antivirus scan.

it will work with most/all malware so in the future if you can't get reg edits for specific viruses use that followed by a virus scan

You're better off using a different anti-virus. Someone in this thread suggested avast, go for it.

Use spybot search and destroy and scan your computer weekly with it, it's kind of an anti-malware/anti-spyware program, and it's free!

I sort of had one. He's just more extreme.

Windows does suck though. Microsoft as a whole does. It's awful that the market is primarily Windows. :/ Life would be better without it.

thats a little bit fully inclusive...

Bill Gates personalized PC's. Life would not be better without that.
And no one has to use windows anymore so i don't understand why people complain. If people don't wanna use it don't?

Thats just like me complaining about apple having the best app store.
but not allowing you to use 3rd party apps. Sure sucks right? well i don't have to use apple products. i could most certainly get an Android...

If we didn't have Windows we would all be running Apple. After all, Bill ripped Windows wonderfully from Apple (with Windows 95, the previous one sucks).
