Default So, my neighbor's daughter is sitting between our houses using my wireless connection

I'm a little insulted that she would just come over and use my internet, but then again we do have unlimited internet access and it isn't causing any harm (that I know of). Right now she's sitting between our houses on the grass with her laptop next to a tree. I don't know that much about internet connections - is she doing any harm? My bro bought a linksys wireless router so we could have wireless internet w/ his laptop, and I never bothered to do anything with it (I use a desktop).

I don't notice any difference in internet speed - maybe she just likes the fresh air. Anyways, I think I'll just leave her alone - she'll be gone in a few days as I think she's only visiting.

[offtopic]And, yes, you are still in my sig![/offtopic]

Secure your wireless network with a WEP Key.

Wireless Encryption Protocol, its like a password, kinda.

That you only need to enter once, and then it is stored (but if the lil girl doesnt know it, then she can't get onto your network).

I think to set it you need to type the routers IP into the address bar, and a whole list of stuff will come up. (Usually the IP is 10.0.0.x). I am geussing, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Is there any way to use shutdown /i on her? That'd be fun... shutting it down over and over again. Dunno if she would be considered part of my network.

Also, I can't really see her (at least not from my window). She looks to be 15-17.

And how would I go about encrypting my router? I've read about it - but the google search just came up with sites that say "encrypt your router using WEP, it's really good!"

Don't use WEP, I can crack it in 10 mins, use WPA or (even better), WPA2. If you can't use WPA, use WEP, it's better then nothing and should keep most n00bs out.
Don't forget Mac adress filtering and maybe shutdown SSID broadcasting.
I made a new script, check it out!.

You can do alot of damage from being connected to any network, simple run of the mill packet sniffers will yield all kinds of passwords. I'm using Ubuntu atm on my network and can view all my sisters msn convos and logins to various sites. As mentioned above by Markus DONT use WEP, its too weak, very easy to gain access to busy networks with WEP. Even if its not busy, packet injection will do the same thing. Use WPA2 if you router supports its (I'm pretty sure it does, most linksys routers do). If you still want to as you call it 'shut her down' Mac address filtering or Ip address filtering would work fine. Have a look in your routers default settings (again depending on your router) putting 192.168.1.1 usually opens up your routers config. But it does vary from router to router. 192.168.2.1 may also be used. post the make of the router and i'll be happy to guide you through it.

    Regards

    Dude

EDIT: for best security a total wired network is best. Wireless is very Unsafe even WPA2 is crackable given enough time....

Don't encrypt unless you have sensitive data traveling over your wireless that needs protecting (or if you're in an area where there's lots of people who could have access to your network). Slows things down, and nobody likes that, right?

Just disable SSID broadcasting, filter mac addresses, and, if possible, do something like this: http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pete/upside-down-ternet.html

Or just go out there, and sit down by her. 'Sup?'.

    @ SmarztKid

Thats still amazingly insecure, mac spoofing would get round mac filters, and there are many programs that can see networks even though SSID is disabled.

As for the link, pretty amusing, works along the same principle as ARP poisoning

IF you have to use wirless, ALWAYS encrypt(unless your sending NO personal data what so ever( eg passwords, usersnames, emails, msn, yahoo, aim...))

I can crack it in 10 minutes too with a portable version of linux, but thats the best security my router has.

Unlucky Spork, what router are you using? Most companies have released new firmware to allow at least WPA....

    @Dude

If you're like me, with the nearest house far out of range of my network, encryption is really unneeded.

But yes, not broadcasting your SSID won't do much for keeping your network hidden.

mac filtering should keep the everyday person or random passerby off a network, though, like you said, it won't keep you safe from a smarter variant.

@Sp0rk: What portable linux do you have that comes with wep cracking tools? Or did you make it?

    LOL...

If she is connected, shut here comp off. theres a tut in the tuts section.

Hey if the wireless light on my modem starts flickering does that mean someones trying to connect to it?
Its usually supposed to be(as said in the manual)power, ethernet(connected to comp),and the 2 status lights link and act.
What does it mean when the wireless light suddenly comes to life?
And does shutting down the modem do anything?
