Default Quick Chat: the demise of free chat?

What do you think? As Runescape turns more and more into a 1984-ish community, will Quick Chat bring about the end of free in-game chat?

If you have been playing for awhile and think about the updates in the last year, you will note that each and every update has been about controlling the people who play the game. The saintly Gowers have made it pretty obvious (at least to me) that they are out to save us all from ourselves by making updates to the game that actually destroy it.

The Wussification of Runescape .. just how far will they go? It's my opinion that this recent Quick Chat update - I mean come on, what in the hell could this update POSSIBLY do for the game?! It's useless .. but they don't do anything without a reason - is the beginning of the end. In-game chat is really all that is left ... if they remove that, in addition to everything else that is gone, there will REALLY be no reason to play.

    What are your thoughts?

I agree that the makers are taking a leap backwards in progress
In the introduction of new updates, they are losing more and more players

The new chat is ridiculous, and i agree that it IS the start of something bigger...maybe they will expand it and relieve players of free chat

Just this week I was given *4* accounts from random players...

At first i thought it was a scam... but
    3/4 accounts had full rune
    4/4 had decent stats
    0/4 had bank pins
    1/4 had recovs..

The reasons were that they "hated the new rs2", "rs2 without wildy sucks" and "i doubt ill ever play again after these updates"
This has NEVER happened to me that someone give away decent accounts because of how bad the game has become

[offtopic] If you're wondering, one account i was given has 84 str, 75 attack, 67 defense and had full rune + rbaxe, raxe, rpaxe, and ~600k [/offtopic]

i think the makers have made MAJOR mistakes over the last year, and i hope that it is not permanant because it really RUINS the game

RIP Old Rs2 (Wildy, free trade, and soon to be free chat)

QuickChat can actually be used by people who are muted.
Other than that, I do not see any uses for it for legitimate players.
You have a good point, but you just state the obvious. The game is getting worse and worse, no doubt, but have you noticed one thing?
For once, there are more people playing P2P than F2P, meaning once those playing members realize how bad the game actually is, they will quit paying and RuneScape will either die or be reverted.

For us, SCAR users and autoers, QC is useful for autoresponders. (I made a QC.scar include that will be in the next revision.)

Although, I still haven't understood what Andrew gained by removing real world traders?

I'm guessing andrew is head of rs or something?

but yeah i have noticed that more are playing P2P
still.. if they keep up the shite updates, the population is going to get smaller and smaller

...not that i think the creators care because theyre already rolling in it...

    Great thoughts

Benjaa .. nice on the free accounts hopefully you can have some fun macroing with them since they seem to already have decent stats and you can really be imaginative.

EvilChicken .. good point with regards to usefulness for the muted players. I agree - that's the only benefit it brings to the common player. Interesting point on paying members outnumbering non-paying members .. hmm. I suppose that one could make the assumption that the majority of the P2P players are long-time players who can't break the Runecrack addiction and the game just sucks so badly that no one cares to even play it for free. Now THAT's bad. Concur on the usefulness for SCAR

I'm not sure what they got out of removing rwt either .. I truly think it just goes back to what I said in my original post - they have taken the weight of the world on their shoulders and they are here to save us all from the bad meanies on the world wide web. I mean come on .. Runescape was WAY more fun when there was even just trade scamming going on .. happened to all of us .. gave us reasons to want to learn more about playing the game so we didn't get scammed again yah, the bots were irritating, but gosh .. I really miss going to green dragons up in wildy and killing gold farmers

LOL, you've probably killed me up there a bit...
    died there SO much,..(stupid poison)

And yeah, scamming and getting-scammed was actually fun, and it DID make me want to play more

QuickChat = AWESOME ...to spam with on a lvl 3 noob! Just 3 clicks and a line is out, and do over and over. So you can get muted by a Mod, and still be able to spam!

its going to be used for selling and buying, and in mini-games mayebe. I dont know how the GE affected buying/selling but if theres still hundreds of people in fally on world 2 then yea, selling and buying.

I definately dont think this is bad. Its eitther good, or it is neither good nor bad. I dont see how it could turn out to be a bad idea, except for making autoresponding easier

Dan .. good point also It's worth pointing out that Jagex makes these comments on their description of the update:

We expect this to be particularly helpful in those situations where you need to give team directions: in minigames like Castle Wars and Pest Control, for example, you will be able to suggest tactics at the touch of a few buttons.
We have also made Quick Chat available to muted players. We believe that this is a more suitable action to take against those who have previously abused the chat system. Additionally, Quick Chat can be used to chat with players on German worlds, since the system will translate whichever chat option you choose.
One way of analyzing their comments is to take them at face value: they introduce the update and then they give you an idea of how it can be used. Makes sense, right? But typically their updates are pretty self-explanatory.

One way of looking at their comment would be to take it as them staking their position when they do remove free chat - remember when they removed free trade and everyone freaked about how loot share would work? They lost tons of money from canceled memberships. They had to go back and revamp the system. It appears here that they are taking the time to TELL US just how this update will be useful in the realms of where people would really complain .. how do we do Mini Games together if we can't talk? O and by the way, now muted players can chat too ......... and people can speak in English on the German worlds. So? O yah, and now you REALLY can't get scammed on German worlds since it translates for you

    Then this comment to close:

Due to the nature of Quick Chat, we cannot entirely predict how players will use it or what players will want from it. So, we would encourage any feedback that you have, to help us tailor the system to your chatting needs. To offer feedback, please post on the official Quick Chat thread in the Suggestions Forum.
Here's where they got smart they introduced an update that could potentially change the entire game IF they remove free chat (and they do it better than the last updates - this time they DON'T change the game first) .. and then give us all the opportunity to do their job for them - in essence, players will troubleshoot this for them, make suggestions, and then be responsible for their own demise.

this is exactly what i thought when they added this update.

I am sure that if jagex removed free chat, 90% of players would quit and 100% of their profit would be lost.

But that doesnt mean they won't try it. They might add it as a bonus to members: "hey you can chat freely!"

free2play runescape ends here. Not updating f2p isn't enough for jagex. They will have to DE-Update it.

I'm pretty sure they're purposely ruining Runescape for the future release of Mechscape where I bet there is no central exchange agency, no restrictions on trading and I bet there will be a wilderness-style area. Either that, or they've been listening to the small majority of people complaining about how RS sucked before and owns now with little individuality.

I don't know about that .. why would they get so controlling with Runescape only to start a new game with no controls? I get the impression that over time, they (Jagex) just continue to become more controlling. If they are releasing this Mechscape game I assume they will introduce all their methods of control into the game from its inception .. and market themselves as "the safest online RPG out there." Yah right.

And yet the free speech continues to demise with the addition of worlds solely for the use of quickChat. While this could potentially be good for us (on these worlds we will know all the q and a's and such) I think this is another big step in the controlling nature of jagex...

Interesting. More free troubleshooting for them on those two worlds and with Fun Orb.

NOTE - We would like to remind players that we have absolutely NO intention of removing free chat from the game, either now or in the future. Quick Chat is designed to be an optional alternative to normal chat.
I made a new script, check it out!.

They also made it clear by saying something like:

NOTE: Quickchat is in no way ever going to replace free chat. We offer this as another way to talk.

Or something like that. I think they made it mainly for muted players. I remember a while ago people often suggested making a bunch of pre-written messages that muted players could use, and here it is.

    EDIT: Markus = Pwnage...

Pwnage? Come on now please .. you guys are giving them just a little too much credit and if you have played as long as I have - you know way better than to even pay that "NOTE" any kind of credit. Every time they have said they were NOT going to remove and/or change something drastically - they have.

Perhaps you are just more optimistic than I am

And maybe make the price for membership a bit more... But really, you want to trade, pk, and play the game as a robot or some sort?

    And thats a fact.

I remember when people were making jokes even back in rs-classic "lol I wonder, what if jagex takes out the wildy".

First they took off staking. People shook that off. Then they all of a sudden take off the wildy and following that, they added the trading rule. I also knew they would take off trading one they added the G.E and started to control the prices of items.

The thing that made this game unique from other games was the player killing style. A style were everyone smiled when they pked some one. Hell- jagex even made a pking section on there forums.

But please note that jagex will take care of themselves first (avoid anything that maybe illegal as in RWT which I doubt is illegal, or pay more taxes, because of the money people are making off there game or somewhat) before they take care of there players.

So maybe some dumb law or some sort, is stating that there game has "to much" swearing or harassment (I also realized that they censored the words "what school you go to", "were do you live".) and they maybe have to start paying more or some shit, -Im just making up some stupid shit lol . They WILL take off in-game chat.

    -Just my opinion tho..
Faith is an oasis in the heart which will never be reached by the caravan of thinking.

You know, Jagex is just trying to run a friendly business. Stop with the bashing, this is getting silly: they're already multi-millionares, and don't need to take the time to remove free chat for more. It's not like they could stop fansites from promoting the use of AOL or MSN, which would certainly happen, and that would not be wanted, since they couldn't impose filters there.

Thanks for your thoughts, but this thread wasn't intended for bashing it was started to discuss the update, nothing more and nothing less. Seeing as how you aren't contributing to the discussion at hand .. thanks for stopping by!

When I said Markus = Pwnage, I meant Markus = Pwnt me, meaning Markus was faster than me

IMO they'll stick to their word. After thousands of people saw that, I doubt they'd end up changing their minds. The only thing it would do is make them lose more money.
