    Default [laptop]diy Or Buy?[/laptop]

    Title kinda says it..

I want a laptop, the one i want atm is £530, 250GB HD and 4GB RAM. Clickly.

But then I was thinking today about buying the components i need and getting someone, paying them, to put it together, i don't know which would be cheapest, if i built it myself then i would get better specs, e.g. 1TB internal HD.

In general, building you own computer is more expensive than just buying one, so don't build one thinking your going to save money.

Aside from that, alot of it depends on what you are going to use it for.

Do you need tons of performance or customized options? If so, then building your own would be good. If you just want something average, then I would go with buying one.

yeah cheaper to just buy built ones, but if you want "best of the best" building it yourself is the way to go

    WTF ARE YOU SAYING!?!?!?!?!
Do you have any idea of what you're talking about?!

Building a computer from components is the best way to buy them, they are CHEAPER, you know what is what and where it goes, you can easily fix them if they fry/break. AND IT'S CHEAPER!!! A LOT CHEAPER!!!

Now, as for laptops, I am less skilled with, I have built 6 desktops from components for a fraction of the cost the computer companies (dell, hp, anything else) would charge. As for laptops (I would never buy one) it would probably be cheaper to buy on from the company, since they have limited room, and component compatibility could be a problem.

So Mr. Platinum, if you were directing your comment towards laptops only, I might agree with you, but you said computers, and that is a straight up retarded statement.

And for the record, they do not make a laptop HDD that is 1TB, sorry to tell you. I believe they go up 500GB.

Addressing the first question - buy one from a store. building one from scratch is honestly not something you can easily do; hardware mods(GFX cards ETC.) are about the epitome of what you can accomplish.

And for the record, they do not make a laptop HDD that is 1TB, sorry to tell you. I believe they go up 500GB.
    I have personally seen up to 1.5TB Hard drives E.X - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148337

For desktops i recommend building your own, laptops though, buy a cheap`o or a mac.

Yes...that is not a LAPTOP harddrive, I have TB in my desktop, not a big deal. You read the first post? Or for a matter of fact what you quoted from me, it say laptop in the quote buddy.

    Noooooooooooooo.

I built my own rig for 900$. It woulda easily been 1500$ in stores.

Accept that the waters around you have grown.

For desktops, about 70% of the time it's better to build. For the type of people on this forum it's probably 90%. And assembling desktops is easier than designing them IMO.

For laptops, IF you can find a good barebones for laptops, build it. But the thing is you won't. There aren't nearly as many options for building laptops as desktops. The ironic thing is, there are more options now than a few years ago, but the need was greater then. Nowadays all the stuff you would have added to a build, is already standard in most laptops. DVD+/-RW (lightscribe for HP), webcam, wireless etc. And with the large selection available, you can get other features like N wireless, tv tuner, dual hds, fingerprint scanner, blueray etc.

1TB internal is a bad idea. Better off with 2 500gbs in raid enclosure.

I'm not much of a laptop guy (except for my EEEpc, but that's not my main pc, it's mostly for work- I'm a computer tech), but even I think that acer looks pretty good. Buy the laptop. Create OS install discs if it doesn't come with it. Buy a portable external drive, and acronis.

if u really want a lappy, then get an EEEpc since they are cheap and not really bad for work (they do the job). but for a "good" lappy, which u game and things on your looking at like £1000 or like $1800 (dont know the exchange rates )

but if u want a computer, then build it urself, its a fraction of the cost and u can build it exactly like u want.

As for building laptops its possible, from scratch, but the plastics alone for the lappy will be about $250, i know cos i was gonna do it. but u need soldering skills mostly and a lot of time. So that's pretty much not an option.

For laptops, i would really advice you to buy a premade one, as making one yourself is hard, very hard. And if you screw up your money went down the drain

If you wanna make a pc yourself though, i would recommend that anyday Trying to buy one myself. If i want a premade pc with the same specs it would cost me €850 Im done for €500 now =D
