Here is my idea. The amount of damage and level of the golem depends on the level of your own character. So if you character is level 3, (1 point each on strength, attack and defense) the golem that is generated will be level 14, but only have stats proportional to yours, meaning it will be very close to level three.
I have had this happen to me several times on noob miners.
