    Default Ghost town

    Ghost town: Graphic concepts

I created this thread as a progress thread, to keep myself motivated(try out on this) and actually finish this thing .

Let's start with the fact that I am terrible at art. Any form of art. I can't draw, paint or anything artistic. I have 0 creative talents. So, I need to improve that. Every time I make a game, I use temp place holder graphics(squares, circles, etc) but I never get around actually creating graphics.

The game is called ghost town and will a city builder similar to Zeus master of the olympus:

I can't draw anything like that The only thing worse then my drawing skills are my animating skills, therefor I decided to use ghosts. Ghost just float up and down a bit, it is all it takes to make them look alive(or dead whatever).

    First concept: Mr BOOOOOoooo

    First concept: Boooosiness man

    First concept: Mr/Ms Fancy Boo

I just started today and progress will be very slow.

    - Tiny Update -

Have been working on the buildings, all of them look like crap. So I am still at step one, picking a style. I will still have to learn the style so it might take even longer as I expected

A small update on the builders/minions/slaves that will actually work in your town(ghosts are the laziest evil creatures out there!)

    Evil Minion

And behold, the worst animation ever!

    - Slightly larger update -

First house which was not 100% rubbish. It needs a lot of accesoires(like pumpkins, skulls and the other common hous ornaments), but the base looks OK for me. This was an exceptionally hard step because I tried so hard to make it isometric, I am happy to just go cartoony .

    General style rules:

    • Large textures on big shapes
    • Tons of details on the accents
    • Lightning from the upper left corner
    • 2D <- no 3D(or 4++ D)!!!!

    Booooo's first house

    actual in-game size:

I'm really interested in a project like this, at least just to follow it. This is a neat project, please do keep it updated!

Man. I know how everyone feels like they have poor art skills, but I don't even think I can make those ghosts <.<

Good job, and keep it up!

    Whooooo-ker! I lost it.

It sounds like you have some pretty original concepts for ghosts, let us know if you need to bounce any ideas around in this thread.

Well I personally think you're coming along with this very quickly, although this is coming from a guy who also completely lacks graphical skills.

Hey there Mr masterBB, how's this coming along? It's been about a week since the last update, how you made some more graphics? Also that house looks nice, but where's the cobwebs and spiders?

Oh yeah and something I noticed in that picture with Darth Vader. Those panels in the background look like an array of tetris games.

Barely any graphics update. Was mostly busy with programming and learning for exams.

However I did realise that having BLACK spirits work as slaves for WHITE ghost might not be a good idea . Since I want to have an equal rights ghost world I will probably give him a bit of a color change .

Though cobwebs looks okay at bigger resolutions:

I can't quite get it right for the actual size:

I will keep it in though. Thanks for the suggestion. A few days I've made some rough sketches of an old windmill with tons of web and a gigantic spider. It will be your main supply of woven cloth. I want to keep the amount of spiders limited, since they need to be drawn big to be recognized.

I will have to make a stack of small attributes I can use everywhere. I already made the spade, crate and oil lamp. I am thinking about candles(with holders), a pole with some fire on it and maybe an axe with some logs. Suggestions are welcome.

I actually just started drawing. 15 minutes a day max, I am sure you can do this aswell.

A true ruler of a ghost city/town/empire will not tolerate that. It seems I am too nice though.

Hey BB, try and brighten the cobwebs into a lighter grey. That should help them retain a higher visibility when you scale them down. The cobwebs would be formed on the outer frame of the window by spiders. Along with the way the light would reflect off spider silk, they'd still stay fairly 'white' even in the dark. Stylistically, you can keep them thicker, and lighter to get the effect you're going for.

Looks like a great project Interested to see how it develops.

As an amateur, you can't expect to develop all your skills at once, I've seen a lot of artists come out with sub-par drawings and then within the years learn to draw much better.

One of my favorite examples is Leslie, the artist for Blaster Nation, look it up, take a look at the first page of the comic, then look at the last page of the comic, tons of development.
