I've been botting 24/7 for a while (think months at a time and 150+M xp) and have yet to been banned. My suspicion is that Jagex may be more forgiving when you are botting levels and generate them income - I've had a few impulsive purchases of spins in the past. Even wankers who go around yelling "reported!!1" about me haven't had any effect as of now.

You should post some progress reports, the scripters would probably love to see them

Most likely its up to who ever is botting to babysit, if you don't babysit you can probably guess you were reported/didn't respond to someone or something else quite obvious like that.

Babysitting is key to not being banned in my opinion. Also having a pmod on your friends list who you chat to regularly
To continue from this post, my friend said that when they report you all it does it put you higher on the bot-review list. So it just decreases the time to reach the top of the queue.

    EDIT: Trent! Clarification.

**decreases the time to reach the top of the queue. Increasing would imply you're being checked less quickly when you're reported.

Perhaps this is the true way to avoid getting banned - make sure they need you more than you need them, buy a few spins here and there. Even if they know you're botting, they would be less inclined if you're bringing money into the game and ensure the safety of their jobs.

Gold farming seems to trigger "gold farming" bans from my experience. Any attempt to run multiple accounts gets me banned in a matter of weeks.
