It is an interesting observation, but as an Australian, I don't even know how I would have reacted in that situation. I'd probably have been pretty disgusted by her comment, but direct racism like this is such a non-issue in Australia (at least in public -.-) that I would have been more confused than anything. It does say something interesting about the divide between white and black people (damn I hate using those terms) if we can assume that the white portion of the room was more unsure what to do at first than the black portion who took instant offence and started leaving.
I hope that made sense, lol.

who is leaving the black people? and why are they leaving?
2. Did anyone care to see anything else that happened? Apparently, the valedictorian's speech got skipped, so they ended up moving it to the end. At this point, some people got up and left. And happened to be black. And she made an observation. Granted, not all the black people were leaving (i can only assume), but a large majority it seems.
(not sure the exact specifics leading up to it or whatever, so just read one of hundreds of news articles on it if you really care)
