I can only name Ritalin and Adderall and that's only because someone I know has ADHD.

You seem very cynical about doctors and their intentions. Psychoactive stimulants don't make children "retarded" and they're certainly not prescribed for no damned reason. They are over prescribed because ADHD is over diagnosed, not because doctors have some secret hidden agenda to get as rich as possible by cramming drugs down children's throats.

I'd also like to point out that Borderline Personality Disorder is a very real psychological disorder that I have personal experience with. "Doing anything for attention" is a gross misunderstanding of the disorder (although to be fair, Garrett did say "limited understanding").

Yes, I can. As far as I've seen, the arguments that most neurologists make against ADHD either comes from a lack of acceptance of psychology/psychiatry (I don't blame them, shit seems stupid half the time) or a desire to base everything on the biological aspect of the human brain. There's a huge difference between the two distinct fields. As mentioned before though, ADHD is frequently over diagnosed and that is a very serious problem because it leads to positions such as yours that it's total bullshit and it's just kids being kids. It's still worth pointing out that ADHD does NOT only affect children. Teenagers, young adults, and mature adults can all be affected.

I think what Garrett was trying to say is that the parents of those particular children aren't just ignoring it and pretending it doesn't exist. Rather they're doing their best to make sure that the child is actually diagnosed (or not at all) and gets the treatment that works best for them. There's nothing wrong with being an assertive/strict parent so long as it's not harming the child in some way.

Dr Oz is a known fraud and supporter of pseudoscience. His words carry absolutely no weight for anyone with even two brain cells to rub together.

I'm sorry, but that's just plain bad parenting. Scientific ignorance isn't an excuse for physically/verbally abusing a child.

I want to be very clear that I apologize in advance if any of my statements sound like I'm angry. I'm actually pretty pissed off and this will be the last time I reply to this thread, because your proud ignorance is extremely inappropriate. I will however try to reply to your statements in an orderly manner in order to get the point across.

As I mentioned before, my girlfriend works in the Mental Health unit in the hospital. I couldn't name a single drug used to tread ADD or ADHD, except Ritalin which I vaguely remember from a kid who took it in elementary school. The fact that you can't name any other solutions is worrying. Most cases that I hear about are behavioral treatment with supervision from Psychologists and highly trained staff (people going into social work, etc). "Crap like this" kills people all over the world. Kids take their own lives because of "crap like this". I've lost count of the number of times I hear "a kid tried killing themselves tonight". I just heard on the news that a group of kids killed themselves in my city a few days ago. They had been discharged from the Mental Health unit a few years ago.

By "supportive" I was saying that the parent is not a "bad" parent. They are a parent doing everything they can to make sure their kid is able to live a happy and healthy life. Whether that be through traditional parenting or requiring mental help for their kid, it doesn't matter. A good parent is a good parent and there are many of them who are unfortunately in a situation where their child is not "100%" mentally.

Regardless of the fact that ADD/ADHD are overdiagnosed (I agree with you, it is), there are still many people out there suffering from completely legitimate mental illnesses. It would make me happy if you never had to see mental illness, because it's a terribly sad thing to see.

Thank you for the clarification. You're completely right, my understanding is based on vague stories from work. After some reading, I've found that Borderline Personality Disorder is usually only diagnosed in adults. Kids displaying these traits are simply said to have "Borderline Traits" and it usually comes across as impulsive behavior based on the need for attention. Some good reading on BPD can be found here. I know someone who has a sister with BPD who refuses to get treatment. The quote that sticks in my head is "Every night before I go to sleep I expect a call saying they've killed themselves or someone else".

I think you've covered the rest of the points well, so I'm glad I don't have to make myself angry going over the rest. Goodbye thread, maybe something good will come from you.

Kinda late, but a few months ago I was diagnosed with autism and I was actually told that these online tests are mostly bull.

So, you should go and see a professional and get assessed. It can help alot in 'real' life too opens up alot of support.

I'm dyslexic and probably have ADHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHD
so what? They barely stop you from doing anything
and I'm sure you can't take an online test to diagnose it
