So, I have avoided getting a smartphone for the longest time now, but it seems my old dumb phone is finally dying and that seems like a perfect reason to upgrade. My problem is I don't understand how they work and keep getting mixed things on reddit when I ask questions there (I think the people answering my questions are idiots, but I don't want to call them out on it).
I have Verizon and need to stick with Verizon so I can continue to have service in my area (although I am also considering Project Fi as an alternative since I can use the wifi when Im at home). I wanted to start with an Amazon Firephone since its cheap, decent specs, and has a year free of Amazon Prime with it, making the phone cost like $40 however I keep getting mixed reviews on whether it will work on Verizon or not once it's unlocked. I don't see why it wouldn't but others have told me it doesn't and I am avoiding calling verizon because I imagine their idiots are going to give me mixed things and try to sell me a different phone.
If the Amazon firephone doesn't work I was considering a OnePlus 1 or a Zenfone 2 but once again, the same thing. I have no idea if they will work with my carrier, especially the Zenfone 2 since it's At&t.
Any help and ELI5 sort of explanation would be great! I know I can get a sim card or something to make it compatible, but from a quick google that seems to add another $50 to the price of the phones or will Verizon provide one for free once I upgrade to a data plan (heard mixed things on that as well).
