    Default Graphics Card Recommendation

Someone mentioned the 1080Ti but it's kind of expensive. Is it really just the best idea to buy the top or near-top of the line model from either AMD or NVIDIA, or are there more nuanced considerations?

I'm kind of looking for a cheap one that is usable for simple games. I have no idea how the graphics cards being sold for around $50 perform, though.

What resolution are you playing on and which games?
    Also system specs and budget?

    Perhaps a 1050.

RX 470 is probably the best value card at ~120 USD. Information on VEGA should be coming out int the next month or 2 though might shake up prices if we're lucky.

For now RuneScape, but I'd like to play some games from Steam at some point. Full HD (1080p) for the forseeable future but I'm looking to upgrade to a 2K 144Hz monitor or a 4K monitor. This is on a i7-4770K running a Windows virtual machine. The card would be given to the VM. Passing four cores and 8GB of RAM seems to behave very well save graphics performance.

Budget is whatever it takes, really, but I'd like to keep it as low as possible. I could buy a 1080Ti but that doesn't mean I can afford it. The 1050Ti (single fan) looks very nice, RX 470 as well. If there's more specific recommendations I'd still appreciate it - please include a brand if you can. I'd like to be able to swap the card to another computer in the future if that makes sense.

    RX470/GTX 1060 for 1080p
GTX 1070/1080/1080ti or wait for AMD Vega for 1440p or higher.

I would recommend EVGA if you're going with a nvidia card because of their incredible customer support.
Can't really tell about AMD ones but MSI should be really good too.
If you can't decide what card to choose you can look at some benchmarks like this one

The RX 480 regularly goes on sale for around ~$160 and is a pretty damn good card for 1080p gaming.

I don't know if you plan on playing super intensive games or if you care about detailed graphics, but the 1070 handles pretty much everything at 1440p Ultra. For 1080p, the 1060 handles everything well.
If you don't plan on playing with highest settings I'm sure you can find a great used card (960/or even cheaper, though if it fails then you're out of luck).
4K you'd want at least a 1070 if you want decent graphics settings.

    +1 to EVGA as well.

Just try to budget according to what you think its worth (and how long it you think it will be relevant/usable)

You need to post the specifications of your system.

750TI used to run like a champ for me. But now, using integrated graphics on the new intel chips I can play league, overwatch, rocket league, scape.

Yeah, it really just depends what kind of res/games/settings he wants to play.

You could do 1050 and it will probably be just fine for 4k. Might be a little bit cheaper than 1070 at little or no perfmance cost.

You should also try overclocking your GPU if you don't get the performance you want.

Anything lower than 1050 will probably be unable to run 60fps 1080p with maximum quality.

I heard something was potentially wrong with EVGA 1070 and 1080 cards cooling ability, keep a look out for that

1080P gaming isn't very hard, you can probably do just fine with a 1050

I take back what I said about the 480, the 580 just came out a few days ago and is pretty much the same price. :P

Yeah I stopped by Microcenter and saw the 580s. It seems like they all have 4GB of memory though, only the 480s seem to have 8GB of DDR5. The 480s are still more expensive. From what I saw the 480/580s were meant to be the "most people will spend this much" offering but there were some ~$100 cards to the side but the 580s seem to compete with them (~$150?).

I might end up getting a 580, thanks for the suggestion(s).

Don't get anything lower than a 70 series nvidia card, I would recommend a 1070.

If you're going strictly cheap maybe a 970

Yeah since my post above someone recommended a 1070. That seems like a better fit despite the increased price. I'd like to support AMD, but oh well.

If you're going to play games, you certainly won't regret a 70 series card.
