Default VM Setup (How much RAM and stuff)

I need to know.. how to make the setup on my VM. I am using Win XP Pro SP2 on both host and guest. Host has 512 (whole computer) of RAM, and VM 256. VM goes SSSOOO slow. What should I make the RAM so both can work at the same time? I am using VMware. CPU 2.66ghz

If there are any options in your BIOS to tweak your memory speed, you should try that. Since the entire VM is running in memory, the memory speed is a huge factor.

You may want to try a different OS on the guest. You are already hurting for memory, and I think the normal WinXP SP2 has a pretty large memory footprint compared to something like Win98 SE.

I have 98 but it is the first edition =[. First edition is so messed up. It runs on like 16 colors (not 16 BIT, just 16 colors :S ) Plus I have dial-up, so getting SE is not really an option.

Can you just tell me how much RAM I should have on there?? Please??

You can set up more than one VM and test out different settings. If I were you I would set the max memory to the VM. Like 384 or 448 or something. If it still runs slow by itself, then you might have to give up on the VM unless you can get ahold of some more ram.

So RAM to 384 or 448? Ok, thanks!

EDIT: Tried 448.. that crashed my computer badly.. I am stupid.. why leave my windows xp pro with only 64 RAM?
    Ill try 384 later probably.

Supposedly you can run WinXP on 64 mb, but I'm not surprised it crashed, lol.

To run a VM efficiently you would probably need to get about 1gig of ram, and then split that down the middle between host and guest. I have 3.5 gigs of ram, and the Intel quad core, I can run 3 VM's on large scripts and 4 on smaller ones. Oh and surf the net at the same time. RAM is a big factor, in some points bigger than CPU clock speed. I would try oc'ing your ram a bit if you have heat spreaders.

I was thinking, I have a lot of bandwidth available and I probably could use some to d/l windows 98 se and burn it to a cd and snail mail it to you? I'll see what I can do, postage shouldn't be much and your a good member of the forums =)

PM me your address if you want me to, I will try to get it out asap.

Damnit, I already have it burnt and packaged. Got any friends I could send it to, then you pick it up from them?
