    Default About IMs

I'm afraid I have to bring this topic back up

In short, my dad told me that if I can prove that IMs are safe, I can use them.

All I'd like you ask you guys for, are links to sites that talk on this subject. (Security and privacy of instant messengers, basically.)

I'm not asking you to go searching for them, just please post if you know of an article or two, please

    Thank you all!

Really they are as safe as who you let know your screen name. Meaning, as long as you don't post it on every site you go on, it should be safe.

    If so, I recommend:

I think Wizzup? choose www.miranda-im.org is because of this...
Miranda IM is designed to be resource efficient and easy to use while still providing many features including support for AIM, Jabber, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Yahoo, and more.
Sounds good I personal use Aim, and it has worked for years (reliabilty). Also you choose your friends and if some one Ims you, you get a little message... <insert name here> wants to talk. Than you click yes or no. Also when you do setup the setting are basic... Male/Female, Country and why you are useing the Imer...

    Hope this helps,

    Thanks, spam

Alright, can anybody give me some reasons on why I shouldn't use an Instant Messenger?

Have any of you ever been 'hacked' on account of using an Instant Messenger?

You shouldn't use an IM because you can screw RL by chatting with everyone

Not sure if you really meant that, or if it was a joke...

But I take you've never really run into any problems with Instant Messengers?

What kind of problems do you mean? Technical issues? Never ran into them as long as I don't set Pidgin to always start on start up.

Any problems. Any problems at all. Mostly technical problems, such as people 'hacking' you, but anything you can give me is appreciated

Don't be so paranoid about 'hackers'. I recommend Gaim, btw.

Uh IMs are pretty safe. I've been using AIM for years and nothing ever gone wrong "techinically", such as being hacked or anything. Just be sure not to save your password if you get on at a friend's house

What do you think would be the safest IM?

If I use one, it'll most likely be MSN, I think. Is this one of the safest?

Aiiiie I really dislike Gaim. (Ugly, quite slow too)

    Miranda is fastest, safest IMO.
And you don't get those stupid nudges/emoticons.
Although if you really want them you could use a plugin for it.
    Another nice point - Plugins.

IM clients are really all about personal preference and needs

For example: If you only use AIM, then get AIM Triton. If you use AIM, MSN, etc, then use something like Trillian, Gaim, or Miranda.

PS: Since all major IM networks are backed by large companies (AIM, MSN, Google Talk, etc) they're very secure (IRC is the only one that's somewhat insecure, because it's not a unified network....or something like that...)

Gaim is old, it is now called pidgin.
The newest version is a LOT of difference, much faster and cleaner interface.

    Awesome

The major IM clients are backed by large companies. Got it. So does that mean Miranda IM is more insecure than MSN or something? Or does Miranda just take all the clients, and puts them into one?

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Xfire. It's mainly used for people who play high end games like WoW, Halo, etc, but it uses very little system resources. It looks pretty, no advertising/adware and is pretty safe considering not many people besides gammers know about it. It logs playing hours for a lot of games, from WoW to solitaire. It doesn't do anything for Runescape though.
