More than one Operating System... Questions!

Well since I am in the process of reformatting to XP, I figured why not have a couple more Operating Systems, like Vista, or even Mac [but definitely Linux!]. But I have a couple questions, first.

My hard drive is [a measley?] 180gb. Fairly old, but working. It definitely has expansion slots for more hard drives, but is it worth grabbing a 80gb, or something around that to install and set up as a master/slave config [I think that's what I want?].

So... yea, any comments on dual booting, or even triple booting with more than one HDD even? Also, is there a way to get a cool boot menu type of thing where when my computer starts up it will be a GUI, or even a cmd prompt kind of thing, where it asks me which OS I want to boot?

In the end I probably want XP, Vista & Linux. Mac might be a little harder to get a hold of.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks, Abyssal.

180gb is fine, If you run each operating system on its own partition on the hard drive your bios should come up with a promt asking which operating system you want to boot from(its just a list of them, kinda looks like when windows messes up and you have the question of start windows normally, last good config, safe mode, and all that). You have 30 seconds to select before it automatically selects. I don't think you can have custom ones because its in bios i think.

If you have the money for a 80gb go get it and use it as a master/slave combo and save backup data on it along with using it for a OS because you said the 180gb was older.

As mr.klean said, the choosing will be no problem, really, if that's all the problems you're thinking of.

What my question is, why Vista? And why Mac?

Stick with XP until all the compatibility bugs in Vista get smoothed out

Partion your hard drive for each OS, ie 20gig vista, 4 gig linux then the rest as your file storage and save that in a FAT file system so you can access it via all OS

With only 20 gigs for Vista, he'll probably have to install programs into his FAT partition.

Thats correct. Its how my notebook is setup. I have partions for just the OS then all my files are stored in its own partion. It works fairly well that way i can access the same stuff from either.

My laptop has a 80GB drive. I just have the one partition running Linux, then XP on Vmware. As for the desktop computer, I have Linux on the master drive (150GB) and XP running on my old laptops 60GB drive.

I would see the need for a common FAT drive if one was to install Linux, but if one was to install solely Windbloats OS's, then NTFS would be just as well.

Windbloats OS? Windows isn't THAT bad =/. If you don't like all the clutter then just do what I do and download TinyXP, which is just XP with all the useless crap removed

Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I'm computer retarded. I remove everything myself, without the aid of those releases.

I made my computer boot in less than a full scroll bar, but it pains me to see other people using "the useless crap", thus, Windbloats.

    Corrected.
And just partition your HD, and then use a bootmanager (grub!) so you can choose easily between your OS's
I recommend at least a Micro$oft operating system (XP), Linux, and OSX would be nice too.
I made a new script, check it out!.

Whoa, calm down...I never said you were retarded. It was just a helpful post in case someone else reading this wanted to know how to get a better XP

If it pains you to see other people using the "full" version of XP, then why not release your version, or at least a guide on how to reduce the crap, via torrents or whatnot?

    markus: Not funny =/
Spky: Why? Everyone would say it sucks

Only after people have gone through the cleaning process.

Because the process took me about two weeks on the computer straight. So no, I might write a quick guide, but not a full blown one. For best results, go to Neowin and Bold_fortune's site.

@lolpie's response to spky: No, not the third graders running around for GEEPEEZ.

One tip: Don't overload on OS'es. Two or three (maybe four) are fine, but think before you install each one... "Do I really need another operating system?"

Also, when it comes to Linux, you should probably do a little research to find out which one is best for you. Also, make sure that you try out some LiveCD's (if available) before you install a distro. (My favorite distros: Sabayon (FTW!), Ubuntu, Debian; SuSe and Mandrake are nice, tooO

Yes, Ubuntu seems to be a VERY popular Linux choice. One of the most user-friendly. I've tried SuSe and Mandrake, but neither supported by dying Vaio's fan drivers, resulting in my room sounding like the interior of a jet whenever the desktop was on.
