GIMP Help, please?

I'm having some trouble with GIMP.

When I use the "Select Shapes from Image" tool, I can select the points just fine, but I can't do anything with the selected area afterwards. If I click inside of it, it disappears. If I click outside of it, nothing happens. The selected area stays put, but nothing else happens.

Please help me. I've been struggling around with this for quite a while now

Never mind. Got it working

Apparently, you have to have opened the file from your computer to convert it into a selection
