    Default Overclocking / Water cooling

I have a sony vaio vgc-rb40 and it seems thru the bios I cannot overclock at all!

I searched google and some have the same problem.
How can I overclock some stuff?

ALSO: Water seems pretty cool, but what are advantages/disadvantages. I know my computer runs without doing anything, just in BIOS it said it runs at 60 celsius, which is kinda high, I think.

I tried adding extra fans, but theres no where to put them.

I might get a new computer soon and water cooling would be the sex. Any advice?

OO, AND: I am thinking of building my own computer... Here is the computer I am kinda going for, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1171671628685, and here are the parts I found... I already have a graphics card, so I dunno if I want another one, with a new gpu (is that a graphics card?) it's like 530, same as the comp, but like, better... Without the graphics card, its like almost 200 cheaper!

I read oc'ing built pc's are easier... Yay!?

Sorry for my absense, btw, wizard of oz + cast parties + sleeping overtook my time

Water cooling is efficient but also very exspensive if i remember correctly. If you mis-install you could have a leak and we all know water and computers dont mix.Overclocking the cpu can mess it up potentialy and if you burn it out and you try to get another AMD will check to see if you tried overclocking it which is kinda easy to find because of the burn spots on it. Overclocking CPUs could possible make your computer unstable also. Also when I was into overclocking I read that there might be a switch on the Motherboard you have to flip to actually over clock it.

Are you trying to make a gaming computer, or just a work computer? Im not familiar w/ AMD + Radeon stuff :/

Both, I use it for stuff, and a little gaming.

I freelance in building computers, and heres my 2 cents.

first off, new egg is expensive. www.geeks.com cheap as all hell

next, water cooling isnt that great. Although the one computer I have thats watercooled runs at about 39-40 degrees celsius, I never really noticed that much change in performance from when i had just a heatsink/fan in there. Plus its actually overheated on me once when the water got too hot(playing FEAR for 9 hours straight). If you want a real kick in your performance while overclocking, i suggest nitrogen cooling which, needless to say, will most likely cost more than the computer itself. Funny story, my friend had nitrogen cooling (top programmer for Paragon Industries, makin the big bucks) and he left it on full-blast one night and when he woke up his mobo was an ice cube, i kidd you not, and his system was shot. so you gotta be careful.

there are many third-party programs that will overclock for you, if your motherboard doesnt have the option in the BIOs but I dont know if i trust em so i've never used em and cant suggest any.

all-in-all, I always suggest just regular heatsink/fan on the proc, fan on the back grate, and just buying a faster CPU instead of overclocking.

EDIT: oh yeah, i forgot to mention. If you really are set on watercooling, i suggest the AquaGate Mini. It's only 85 bucks, comes pre-assembled, compatible with all mobos/procs, and the installation is a breeze.

[offtopic] Is overclocking safe to do? I don't like the sounds of working my processor harder thats its supposed to..[/offtopic]

Its not really, safe as it could burn it out.

Small overclocks are ok. But if its not needed then theres no point. Im studying my cisco and microsoft certification now and we just screw with the computers. And we overclocked our class computers substantially and still nothing. But there is really no point if its not that needed.

Also watercooling meh. Fans are fine. I cant remember what mine runs out. But 60 celsius? Was that the comptuer temp of the cpu temp? One of my friends cut a huge hole in the side of his case and installed this m,assive fan that he bought for 15 usd. Never had heating problems. Although it was loud as hell.

It's almost impossible to OC factory manufactured computers because the makers "lock" out the OCing bits (voltages, multiplier, bus speed)

    Advantages: Super quiet, great temps
Disadvantages: Expensive, if you fuck up your computer's toast, hard to set up

    Looks good. What's your budget?
    A few things I noticed:
-You have 2 PSUs: One in the case and the one you're buying.
-You have a good gfx card, but a slow processor. That will bottleneck your fps a bit if you game
-Pick up another SATA cable because the CD drive is SATA and your mobo only comes with one

Yes, OCing custom PCs is easier because the makers don't cut out the OCing options

    Hope this helped

Munk: You have any suggestions on a computer-building business? I'm trying to start one up but its hard. Thanks
Hey lady, I need a yank! Ha ha, dislocation.

60C? Holy shist! mine runs at about 45C?

Well, anyway, you might want to get an old fridge and take out the cooling system, and try to form the wires round the comp. (You will have to buy freon(sp?) as they remove it when they trash the refridgerator.)

I think its like the nitrogen cooling system, go with fans until your working that computer harder than normal.
The jealous temper of mankind, ever more disposed to censure than
to praise the work of others, has constantly made the pursuit of new
methods and systems no less perilous than the search after unknown
    lands and seas.

OK. A little gaming? If that means what I do..don't take a $200 graphics card. I got an nVidia GeForce 7600GS for about $80. Yes do Newegg. Don't listen to Munk. It's reliable and fast, and sometimes, that's worth the extra money..that is, if it's prices beat Newegg (Bullcrap if you ask me). Go and look for a cheaper gpu if you want though.

lol just wait once you get a screen, keyboard, mouse, OS, and software it'll be $800 hapenned to me lol
