    Default PS2 Modding

Everyone has heard of XBox modding, but that's not what I'm looking for. I'm trying to find out a cost-free (if possible) way to play backed-up or burned discs on my PS2. I know its possible because I have seen many people play custom versions of Guitar Hero on there consoles.

Googling is only leading me so far, and I can't find out a way to do it without risking my system or costing too much than I'm willing to dish out for something that might not even work.

If anyone has any information about this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I checked into this a few years ago, not sure what is still out there...1 option was an emulator for your PC to play them...the others involved physical modding of the console itself, removing the access door on the front, inserting 1 disk to boot from, then unplugging power and inserting the disk you want to use and turning back on.....and some invloved the soldering of wires inside....1st generation machines were best, as they didn't have some kind of security stuff built into them...I have one 1 for parts, if you want to pay shipping on it, otherwise, check your local classifieds, as they are cheap to buy nowadays....I'll post back with the links/Info If I find them,

idk but my friend bought some disk (called like magic something) and you had to run it on the ps2 and then use a tool to open the disk drive and put a game in and it would run burned games. im sorry that i can not remember the name of the disk but he used it and it allowed him to play burned games. modchips are a good choice (its not as easy to softmod as xbox because of the lack of harddrive...)even though they cost $.

edit: after rams post its swapmagic and theres an easier way to do it with that. you can just take off the cover on the front of your disk drive and pry out the drive. my friend had a special card that he got with the swapmagic that allowed him to pull it out without hurting the drive dramatically.

I have the cheapest solution of all

My brother found out about in on some site, you can put a (false) savegame of a playstation 1 game on your memory card using an already modded PS2, using a cd. Then when you put in the matching ps1 game it will load the save game, which is actually an ELF loader (ELF is kinda like exe for ps2). With that you can then load HDLoader and then play iso's from your HD, so you will also need a HD for your PS2. (doesnt work on the slimline ps2)

You can always pick up a book at your local library about reverse-engineering at least an xBox! I'm sure reverse engineering is the same as modding, and one could be found for the ps2?

(Yes, there is an entire section at my library about reverse engineering...)

Mod chip. Its kinda pricey but the effort it saves you (unlike swapmagic) will be worth the price.

Ok to play burned/back-up games on the PS2, here's what my friend did:
He bought MagicSwap 3.6 and a slide tool from -
    HTML Code:
    www.magicswap3.com
It's easy and doesn't require a mod chip, and it only costs about $20. I think it's pretty cool!

Which is about $55 ca if I am correct.. Still, I only have so much money that I want to dish out, and I have my priorities. Would I buy a mod chip at a local retailer, are they legal to sell?

Well...i did a little research and i found this:
    www.modchip.com
Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but they do sell mod chips for gaming consoles. This is just one of the many modding sites that are out there...
oh, and If all else fails... lmao!
