    Default Helping Teen Depression

So, a friend of mine is suffering from severe depression. Like really severe. He's attempted suicide once, and says the only thing keeping him from killing himself is his friends. He's seeing a psychiatrist and he's talked with school counselors, but I'm not sure what to do. Also, he has mild anorexia (eats a full meal every other day or so); not because he has problems with his physical image, just because of his depression. Is there anything I can do for him? We (friends and I) try not to bring it up that often, but we've already had a few talks with him and made him promise a few things to us. I think he's getting better, slowly, but I/we still worry about him.

I've never been depressed for long periods of time, so I'm not sure what works and what doesn't. Could anybody help me help him?

Well I've been kinda depressed, or atleast tired, but try to adversite to him some new hobbies or something that gets him like out of "normal life" like just going to school etc. Maybe something exciting, does he like roleplaying or computers? Also if he doesnt eat much, it will definetly affect to his mood, try to cheer him to taste some new food for example! (:

He's amazing with computers and math, too. He also knows a lot of AP calc, knows more formulas than he should (he was trying to teach me spatial multiplexing, wiki it), and pretty much understands most electronics inside and out. He's the sort of guy who actually understands how wireless connections work, MIMO systems, etc.

He went trick or treating w/ me last night, so at least he has some candy

Did you know suicides get sent to hell? Tell him that - it'll scare the shit out of him. (Lol, watching Constantine)

Really... Just think with him. Why is he depressed? If its something like a girl, tell him to get over it, but if its his parents... ummm...

Tell him to think if he really wants to throw his life away - if he really is that good at mathematics, computers, and all of that stuff, tell him to put it to good use and raise his grades, etc. He might as well discover the time-machine before he kills himself.

make him a good main and pk'ing account on Runescape. When he gets to know how to play Runescape on the main, then give him the pker. And he'll get happy killing other people, ingame. Or just go do something outside like skateboard or bikeride. No alcohol, it's not good when you're too stressed out.

Look foward to the future, and tell him to try and not give up just yet.

Things suck at that age, I went through alot of depression when I was 15-16. My girlfriend at that time slept with two other guys on the same night. At the same party I was at. After that it all kinda went downhill...

But then I got away from where I lived, and went to college. Lived there for 2 years and had the best time of my life. Met friends I didn't even think could be that cool. We had some great experiences together, jumping out of college grounds at 3am to get fries (we're not fat, haha), experimenting with drugs and alcohol (... mm), just generally having a laugh, everything was so funny. Exact same sense of humour. There wouldnt be 5 minutes without at least 1 of us laughing.

What I'm trying to say is, life is shit at that age. You've got basically no freedom and you feel your parents are always on your back. But, just carry on living for a bit longer, your friend is so close to the time when life starts to get amazing.

Just tell him to hang in there, because I promse him, things will get better.

Hmm. Well I was diagnosed with depression about 6-8 months ago, I've been on heavy meds ever since. They've helped, but eventually they don't work as well anymore, which is what I'm going through. Just get him to see a doctor, seriously, because he won't get into any new hobbies or anything like that in the state that he's in. Trust me on that one.

Well suicide is a scary thing, if he has all ready attempted it once I would watch him really carefully. If he shows signs of a relapse then tell his parents or psychiatrist or whoever.

Also, if he is not already on antidepressants I suggest he get some, under the supervision of his doctors and family. Just watch him though because those meds can increase risk of suicide.

As to day to day life, just be nice to him. Don't push him too hard to do things but remember that being around people is very important in treating depression so keep in close contact. Just be gentle, people are usually allot more sensitive in this state.

Its rough. But stick with him. He needs it.

Accept that the waters around you have grown.

Last year REALLY sucked for me. A lot of family issues and stupid school didn't help any. Then over the summer I got into photography, a hobby that I haven't done since like 6th grade, and I remembered why I love it. Now I have a few new hobbies and now I have stuff to look forward to. I have a list of personal projects I want to do and I can't wait to get home from school to work on them.

This year is so much better. I just feel way better. I don't wake up with a feeling of pointlessness to life. I feel like I have purpose! Maybe because family issues have died down and I've gotten control of school, but I think finding a hobby and making friends with people with similar hobbies is REALLY GREAT.

I can't tell you what to get him to do, but having a life is really good.

BTW, I've been working on this AWESOME project involving photography that I'll be done with in about 2 weeks. I'll post it here for everyone to see.

Sorry to say, but life really is pointless. I figured that out a while ago.

When I was depressed, I would read long epic stories. I.e The Sword of Truth & The Wheel of Time.

Did those stories include "The Game" or "Losing The Game"?

Actually the The Wheel of Time went in depth with The Game.

And how actually winning the game could crash the universe? Thats a widely disputed theory as to the legend of Chuck Norris winning the game.

Hmm...He sounds like the lonely type.
What type of person does he look up to?

Chances are, he's probably done some sick stuff and has some bad habits if he's attempted suicide. It snowballs. Do not say some bullcrap thing that channel one advertises.(Don't know if you have seen that - it's funded by Bill Clinton and some other liberals trying to control the school media.)
Try to figure out what he does when he is not around friends, what his hobbies are, etc., let him know he isn't alone that you are (white lies work) for him, hang out and just do normal stuff, because he probably think he is the 'Last Oddball on Earth.'
