MechScape is believed to the name of an upcoming 'undisclosed game' that Jagex Ltd has mentioned in Jagex recruitment material. Sources indicate that this is a Java-based space/sci-fi MMORPG based on the technologies used by the Jagex MMORPG RuneScape. Jagex have neither publicly announced or categorically denied that the game is in development beyond statements that there is currently no public beta of the game.
There are three strands of evidence for MechScape. The first relates to Jagex's use of the name, the second relates to the nature of their 'upcoming game', and the third links the other two together.
[edit] Jagex's use of the term MechScape
The most verifiable source of Jagex's interest in and intended use of the term MechScape comes from their UK, EU and US trademarks for the term[1].
Numerous website domains containing the term 'mechscape' or with a 'mech' prefix are registered to Jagex Ltd[2], including the mechscape.com domain, though they do not have any content on them. There are 82-132 domains concerning the game.
[edit] Nature of their upcoming game
Jagex job advertisements for content developers claim that a "sci-fi interest" is useful and that they are working on an 'undisclosed game. They have also recruited for people to create low-polygon models "for environments, objects, vehicles, characters and special effects".'[3][4][5]
Jagex's trademarks for MechScape cover MMORPGs and some of the domain names registered appear to anticipate real-world trading[6].
Former Jagex employee John Seru claims to have been the lead modeller on an "online space mmorpg" between April 2005 and October 2006[7]. Thomas Woode claims to be a Jagex employee who has "recently moved to the role of Lead concepter for a exciting new MMORPG title currently in development", and provides concept art of space ships with Jagex copyright on it[8][9].
