Default Head injury, is it serious?

Hi, my smallest brother, about 4, has just hit his head on the corner of a radiator. Blood was squirting out of his head and i got really scared. I am convinced that he should go to the emergency room, but my parents say its nothing serious. I probably should trust my mom as she is a speech-language pathologist and has studied the brain. The injury was the result of tripping and my mom says that it is "close head injuries" (when the head is hit with a hard blow) that are dangerous. His pupils are not dialating or anything and he knows how old he is. Im still really paranoid and i would really like to know what you guys think.

Take him in, just in case. If any bones in his head hit inwards, it could hurt his brain possibably (I am not a doctor, just saying). Even if nothing is wrong, it won't hurt to take him in

honestly, in the best interest of the kid, you should take him just in case.

but note, there is a another dark side to this that you probably havnt thought of.

CPS, child protection services. They are ... well, were and sometimes are.. a good meaning organisation that helps prevents babies being dumped into dumpsters...

HOWEVER. they kinda go a little crazy.. a little to often. My mother in law used to do some papaer work stuff for them.. and she was litteraly shocvked at what little it would take for them to take your child away.

yeah, they can do it for almost anything, and brining a child with a head injury to the hospital could be taking the risk of some crazy CPS person deciding to take the kid away from your mom.

And honestly, if he is still mobile right now... the head ingury isnt that bad.. and having him takien from his parents is VERY bad...

so yeah,,, i would probably leave this up to your parents, there are some more factors in it than just making sure he is ok.

i don't think they can take him away your having the kid be taken in for an injury now i see if you didn't take him in for it.

Yea, the kid tripped and fell, they can't take him away for that, unless you tripped him purposely, then maybe. But if there is serious trauma and you dont take him then they have a chance of standing up in court as you ignoring the child and neglecting health issues.

BUT if it isn't literally 'squirting', he isn't dizzy or nautious, you said he knows his age and where he is. So ask him those two things, if he's not then don't worry, just keep an eye on him.

i completly agree hobbit... however... thats not the point.

they point is these people doenst think logically, and could say that
"you triped him" "yo picked him up and hit his head against X" crap like that. they are crazy, not logical.

Very true, they are like that in Canada too, but here they have to go to court and go through a trial to get the child taken away. And our courts think more logically then the US ones (no offence but its true..) and they courts will rule against it unless the Social Services person have 100% undenyable proof it was diliberate.

So I guess it all depends what country your in.

thanks guys, he seems ok now

there was a lot of blood, but my mom says that area of the head always bleeds a lot (finally finished cleaning it up). My mom explainded that it was a sharp edge, not a hard blow, therefore there was no internal bleeding and he would be ok. I guess my mom knows about this stuff.

anyways, he doesn't feel dizzy or bad in any way. He is watching a movie and hasn't passed out. All good signs. He can still count and he knows what day it is. Overall he seem fine. My mom is also keeping a close watch for anything abnormal, so i am pretty sure there will be no brain damage.

    Thanks for your comments guys

only one question, why would i trip my brother?

I wasn't imply you would do it by the italics, it was just that they might try to use that as a loop hole and try make it look like you did.

yeah.. dont get me started about american courts...

but i think its a good genral rule to assume that all courts and fucked up cept for the last court (in which you have a perfect judge).

and unles you do (and you wont here on earth) then no good, and its a bit of a risk when u child is on the line.

You parents seem to be taking good care of him like they should, i am confident he will be fuine if he is watching tv, just get some antibiotics on it to make sure it doesnt get infected and stuffs.

(but im sure thats already been done)

Which are what lawyers are for.

Accidents happen all the time. Having an ER doctor look over a kid is free. If Child Services radicals want to take a kid away over that, they can't. The courts will block them as per the system.

gah poor fella *hugs* sounds like it scared the poo out of you .. just goes to show how much you care about your little bro!! I am sure he will be okay .. it sounds like your mom is doing her mom-thing and she is right - a sharp cut would be shallow and bleed lots.

If a person has a brain-damage or has suffered some kind of damage to the BRAIN (Not just the head, as your brother probably), they will have problems trying to lift both arms at the same time. Try to get him to do that and stand on 1 leg for 1 second, or something, just to check if his balance is intact.

That would probably be sufficient, I think, but I'm not a doctor (Not even close).
