    I. Introduction

These are just some simple notes and lessons that I would try to remembers as long as you are around the forum, this will help keep you out of trouble as well as keep you in good standings with the majority of the community.

First of all you should be familiar with the rules and regulations of SRL which can be found here.
Some rules to follow that will keep you in good standings with your fellow SRL Peers.

    A1. DO's & DONT's
    [Partially Thanks to Runescapian321]

These are some rules you should follow that the vast majority of members follow and the forum as well as some common courtesy tips you should follow to keep you in good standings.

    1. DO NOT double post, that means making a post after a previous post made by you BEFORE another person has a chance to post. If you think of another idea, don't make another post until someone else posts, or use the "Edit" button near the bottom right corner of the previous post to add content to it.
    2. DO NOT make your signature longer than you average post. Yes you can have images just try not to clutter up the forums too much. Also avoid gigantic font / size in your Signatures, its ok to have big font just don't make it too big.
    3. DO post progress report and give helpful advice to scripters on how to improve their scripts.
    4. DO NOT sound arrogant or cocky when pointing out flaws in scripts or when giving advice. [Ex. "Wow you're stupid you forgot a period retard!"]
    5. DO read the majority of a thread or at least skim it before posting on it. If you don't you'll most likely make your self look like a fool, and possibly hurt your chances of becoming an SRL Member.
    6. DO NOT be mean when flaming leechers, at least attempt to help them and try to point them in the right direction before flaming them.
    7. DO post often, keeping up good relations with other members of the forums will help you stay in the loop about things as well as show your interest in scripting when or if you apply for SRL Members
    8. DO NOT spam your ass of to become a SRL Junior Member or to get your post count higher. Post that are considered spam are post that don't have at least 50% content pertaining to the topic of the thread.

    B1. Forum Categories

This will explain the what the purpose of each of the categories / section of SRL are for.

    SRL Public Forum

[General News] - The main discussion area for anything relating to SRL, SCAR or nothing at all. This category is meant to keep people up to date with things happening in the cheating community as well as Talking about general SCAR / SRL Autoing. So long as you intent to inform the public of some or want to discuss something of relevance then this is the place to put it.

[Tutorial Island] - Only for Tutorials, any kind of tutorials to be exact. So don't flame [Insert Name Here] for posting a Tutorial about pr0n. Also if you need someone to make a tutorial about something Post that in the [Scripting Help] category not here. There are a lot of tutorials here ranging from the starting No0bl3t to the Uber1337.

[Scripting Help] - This is for Scripting Help not help with your science project that you're going to fail on. Please ask only questions pertaining to SCAR / SRL scripting here. Also when you reply to a problem try not to be a jerk about it and make sure you post your suggestion as positive criticism not harsh flaming. People need help with thing of varying difficulty here so don't be shy if your just starting out to lend a hand.

[General Help] - Any questions that aren't pertaining to SRL/SCAR scripting or coding in general should be posted here. This is the place where you can find out the circumference of a moose, and what the answer to life the universe and everything is.

[SRL Junior Member Scripts] - This area is meant for scripts that you don't want average Joe to come on the forums and take w/o even registering. Only post Working Scripts here.

    DO NOT POST...
    • Suggestions
    • Requests
    • Broken or Flawed Scripts
    • Scripts in Progress / Alpha-Beta Scripts

[First Script] - Post your first scripts here, can be for any kind of script. This section is meant to help up and coming scripters learn new techniques and to display their first works. [Free For All Scripts] - This section is for Working Scripts that you'd like to share with anyone who visits the forums. Please refer to the "DO NOT POST" Section above for more details. Remember though, anyone can take these scripts without even registering.

[Public Test Corner] - This is the area where you should post scripts that you'd like to test as well as any functions or procedures that you need help fixing / improving.

[S.M.A.R.T.] - This section is for anything and everything related to SMART and SMART only.

[SRL Scripting Competition] - Self Explanatory, although keep all posts within this category strictly related to the SRL Scripting Competitions.

[Site Discussion] - Post any ideas on how to improve the site as well as any invalid links (on the site, not in posts) you find or any bugs / cache errors. Also if your getting SPAM or Hate mail post here and the convicted will be investigated / charged.

[Strategical Info] - Any Tips, Hints, and Tricks you can supply your peers with that either you use or have noticed while auto-ing. Things that help you stay un-banned, all the way to good mining spots you've found.

[The Bot Spot] - If you notice bots, either SRL Autoers or Java Bots post where you saw them and what they where doing, along with names, skill levels and any other info you can think of. Screen shots are good too.

Programming - Self Explanatory. Only talk about non-SCAR related programming here.

    Waste of Time Out!

[The Bashing Club / BBQ Pit] - Screw the rules of sportsmanship and flame anyone about anything. Just make sure you keep it here, no-where else! Also if your going to flame an Admin I highly advise against it, but you are allowed to, it may just result in a ban depending on their mood.

[Discussion / Debates] - Any questions you have / any thoughts you may have about anything in the universe that you think is so very important.

[Graphics] - Made a new Sig / SRL Banner? Post it here! You can post any artwork you made here just keep it appropriate... ish.

[Blogs and Boring Stories] - Any blogs you want to make or if you have a story you'd like to share, post it here. Why is it so close to the bottom you ask? I couldn't tell you...

[Misc. Links and Programs] - Any Links to places or programs you've found that have nothing to do with anything...

[Pathetic Poetry] - I don't even know why this is here... but I did post a cool tongue twister there once.

    C1. Who's Who

Some people you may want to become friends with or stay friends with if you hope to become important here / have a good time here.

Sumilion - SRL and SCAR are more of a hobby to him so don't complain if he's not up to date with everything or isn't on 24 / 7. He is a very humorous guy and isn't really strict all that often, so try to lighten up around him. Also he's always willing to help anyone with anything so long as he doesn't have to do any actual work, so don't bug him to try and fix your script because "Eyt R Br0wknz!".

tarajunky - He's an older gent who's getting a PhD. in molecular biology who loves programming and games, but has less and less time for them every year. As an opinionated, intelligent, and obsessive maniac it's best not to take everything he says to heart, lest you emotionally scar yourself for life. The one thing he says he doesn't like is SPAM so don't go mucking up the forums or you'll feel the wrath of tara!

Yakman - A multi-lingual *as far as programming goes* programmer who tend to hang around for friends and memories more than anything now. Although a bit timid he tends to keep his posts sensible and thoughtful, and generally good overall to set a good standard for other users who need someone to look up to. Being open-source is one of his biggest belief, not only because this community runs of it, but also because it supplies every one of us with important knowledge.

Hobbit - Doesn't like to talk a lot about himself so it's hard to get information on him, he also forgets to respond to PM's after a while . He is a cute fuzzy hobbit in real life, except for that fact that he has enormous, razor-sharp talons, who's is exceptionally upset by those who don't get banned peacefully.

BenLand100 - A very interesting and generally complicated person who's actions and intentions may not be fully understood until you can figure out his entire plan, and even then, sometimes people don't understand him. He claims this complicity stems from his unwillingness to trust people without a good reason and his natural secrecy and aloofness. His biggest pet peeve is when people pretend to know something that they obviously don't know, and people who make irrational assumptions or are clouded in a shroud of self-perpetuated ignorance.

nielsie95 - From what I know nielsie rarely has time to write a full explanation of things but it generally helpful and insightful about most things related to programming. Nielsie's natural helpfulness is a characteristic rarely overlooked be newcomers and SRL-Members alike. His biggest pet peeve however is when people who should know better *I.E. SRL-Members* spam the forum with useless crap.

Starblaster100 -A University student currently studying Mathematical Sciences with very little free time and a tendency to randomly disappear for extended periods of time without notice. He is a hard working, caring, active person who never gives up and strives to see life for what it truly is. Starblasters biggest angst is SPAM along with a lot of other members but also plagiarism. Don't try to take credit for something that isn't yours if you ever plan on making friends with this guy.

Wizzup? - A big leader today in SRL, this hard working Amsterdamian believes that everyone should be treated equally and tries his best to see that, that happens. He enjoys SRL immensely but confesses that he thinks it is taking up too much of his time, seeing that he has to tend to tons of minuscule problems that he wishes people would just fix themselves rather than being able to put his efforts towards scripting like he wants. While he has no real "pet peeves" he wouldn't mind seeing people act as more of a leader than a follower when things need to be done.

Boreas - I don't know what to say about him... He used to be very angsty about everything but he's mellowed out a bit since I applied for SRL Members. I haven't seen much of him around lately... Just don't act stupid or arrogant around him.

Dankness - He owns the forums! What more do you need to know!

RAM - If you want to be on his good side... Don't be from Texas, Don't SPAM, and Try to be somewhat intelligent. He is normally easy to talk to and is good with words so read his posts before replying to them.

WT-Fakawi - I have no idea what to tell you. He's just awesome and I don't think I've seen him mad at anyone other than admins / mods before. If you haven't heard of him you've got to be blind in both eyes or something. While I'm still waiting for information he's sent to me he is taking a break from SRL at the moment and taking care of some business IRL, but he will be back!

[Yohojo] - DON'T COPY SCRIPTS ON YOUR SRL MEMBER APPLICATION FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

Thats a good description of a lot of people who can have a big impact on your stay at SRL. Take heed of these words since most of these facts and explanations are derived from direct conversation with those people above.

    II. Navigation and Location

This section will provide you with information on how to navigate the forums efficiently as well as find what your looking for.

    A2. Search Button

The basic form of search, use it often and use it well. You can find an answer to almost anything relating to SCAR / SRL using this and it will save you humiliation and flaming if you use it rather than just making a thread asking a question. Another useful feature of the Search Button is its Advanced Mode. It helps you look in more specific areas when searching for something and helps you find posts by specific people. Find New posts and Find Todays Posts are very helpful as well if you visit frequently and want to know what going on.

    B2. Quick Links

Helps you navigate the forums and supplies links that are commonly used. The "Quick Links" Tab is located at the top right of the SRL-Forums next to "Search" and "Donate" and includes links to...

    • Todays' Posts
    • Mark Forums Read
    • Open Buddy List
    • Edit Signature
    • Edit Profile
    • Edit Options
    • Private Messages
    • Subscribed Threads
    • My Profile
    • Who's Online

As you can see they are links that most people would use every day, and are for that reason are called "Quick Links".

    C2. Subscribing to Threads

Subscribing to threads is easy to do and can save you from having to search around the forums as well as keeping your favorites list and Tabs clear on your web browser. To Subscribe to a thread simply click "Thread Tools" at the top of the page of the thread and select "Subscribe to this thread" and bam! You are now subscribed to the thread. You can view your subscribed threads by going through "Quick Links" or in your User CP.

    D2. iSpy

This helpful little tool sits near to top of the SRL-Forums website next to "Wiki" and "Calendar". iSpy will show you the latest posts along with a time stamp so you can see whats going on without having to navigate through the forums and wait for it to load each page... Just Click on the "ISpy" link at the top of the page and wait for it to populate a list.

    E2. New Posts
    [Thanks to Dan Cardin]

This helpful little button near the top of the SRL Website displays all "New Posts" that have been posted since the last time you refreshed the page. It also shows old posts that you haven't viewed yet. This is great when your trying to find something to talk about, want to get your post count up, or just want to be helpful.

The link to "New Posts" is at the top of the web page next to "Bug Tracker" and "Search". It will have a number next to it as well telling you how many new posts there are as well.

    III. People and PM's

This section will provide you with some information on talking to people on the forums as well as some tips and information about Private Messages. This should give you a good way to approach people about problems as well as how to contact and administrator or someone without making them angry and getting them to really understand the situation.

    A3. Private Messaging

Private Messaging or PM'ing as it's widely referred to is a great way to connect with other people around the forums in a more secure and private way. Some things that people don't understand though are that when they send PM's to people they may be offended or just glance at the title / message and just delete it.

Tip 1. When you have to send a PM to multiple people, you don't have to keep resending the message over and over. There is a box at the top of the "Compose Message" Page where you can put the names of up to 5 recipients. Make sure all the names are spelled correctly and have a ; after each name.

Tip 2. When sending PM's you always want the title to summarize your message as well as look formal and appealing. You don't want to send messages written in 1337sp34k. You want it to have proper grammar if your trying to contact a higher up about issues or get help with problems that you may have with scripts. You want the title of the message basically to say what your talking about but still be vague enough to make the reader not be able to dismiss it completely without opening it.

Tip 3. When writing messages keep them formal and don't quote stack. Meaning that you don't want to have a quote of a quote of a quote of a quote of the last 4 messages in there. It gets quite annoying and makes it so you have to scroll a lot before you can get to the real message. If you need to remind them what you where talking about just send them the contents of the message before the current one in quotes or the original question in quotes.

    B3. "Name - Brand" Links

The link's I'm referring to here are the links you can access by clicking on a persons name in a thread. When you click on their name you get a few options all of which can be very, very helpful when either trying to contact the person or trying to find a specific post by that person.

    • View Public Profile
    • Send a Private Message to [Insert Name Here]
    • Send email to [Insert name Here]
    • Find all posts by [Insert name Here]
    • Add [Insert name Here] to your buddy list

As I said before these can be very helpful when trying to contact people as well as finding previous posts.

    C3. Profiles

Profiles are a great way to tell people who you are as well as allow you to connect with each other and communicate via email or IM. If you want put your email / MSN / AIM name in there it gives people an alternate access route in case they ever need to contact you. Personally I think putting your MSN / AIM name in there is great, it helps you talk quicker to people as well create a more private conversation.

D3. What Makes a Good Post?

Posting on topics and replying to PMs is basically all you do on a forum, so here's some tips on how to make each of your posts, helpful, memorable, and well structured so you can get that new "Helpful Poster" Cup.

    1. When replying to a topic, remember, if your going to post something at least make it relevant to the topic.
    2. When you post, try to use good grammar and punctuation. I understand not everyone here speaks English but try to make your messages presentable even if you don't. Ex. "dnt spll st0f leik dis".
    3. If your going to reply to someones post but a lot of people have responded before you, quote the persons post who you want to reply to by click the green "Quote" button at the bottom of their post. Additionally if you want to quote multiple people press the green arrow next to the quote button on all the messages you want to quote.
    4. If you thought of something important but it doesn't pertain to the topic (It may pertain to something they where talking about) either PM the person it concerns or make it known that what your talking about is "off topic" with some [Offtopic][/Offtopic] tags, so when new people join the conversation they aren't confused.
    5. If you see someone who is way off topic in a conversation please try and remind them to either take it to IMs or PMs and not clutter up the thread. When you do this though, remember to still post something relevant to the topic so they don't turn around and say your doing the same thing.
    6. Remember, the majority of the people on this forum are high level thinkers, so when your writing a message that you intend to be profound use critical thinking to take in all angles of a given proposition so that you don't end up making yourself a fool.
    7. Try to start all threads off with something that pertains to your topic / question. Don't just put "How do I change Integers to Strings?" in your post or put "See Title" in your post. Explain what you want to know and why, because if you tell people why they may have other ideas on how to make it more efficient or all around better with some new ideas that you may have not even thought of before.

IV. Other Tips, Tricks, and Hints

    A4. Personal Favorites

My personal favorite Tips and Tricks that I use a lot are the "Quick Links" and using Search -> Advanced Search -> Find Posts By User "Special Ed". That helps me find the topic's I was talking about the day before or earlier without having to subscribe to every thread I visit. I also use the "Brand-Name Link" to send PM's to people a lot since its easier than having to type out their name.

    B4. Most Used

    D4. Helping Out!

If you'd like to help out the forum there are quite a few things you can do, some monetarily and others atmospherically. Meaning you can help out by Donating to the forum to keep it running and keep Dankness from having to pay for it all, and by keeping the atmosphere around the forum friendly and clean.

    Donation

If you'd like to donate to the forum there is a button at the top right hand side of the website next to Logout that says Donate. Just click that button and it'll bring you to another page that asks you how much you'd like to donate. You can only donate through paypal or a credit card, but if you'd really like to donate and cannot setup a paypal account, I suggest contacting Dankness about it.

After your type in your donation amount, click the little Paypal button below which will bring you to a "Billing Information" page asking your credit card information or allowing you to log into your paypal account.

    Other

If you can't donate, or just don't want to you can still help the forum by keeping a positive attitude and doing some of the following.

    • Report SPAM and other abusive or derogative posts by clicking the red box with an "x" in it near the top left of the post.
    • Help people with their questions, or if you can't explain something refer them to someone who can.
    • Be respectful and try to encourage up and coming scripters to keep working at it!
    • Don't swear, its not illegal to swear here but excessive swearing can lead to infractions, and also swearing just means you can't come up with something intelligent to say, and people know that.

Love it. Great guide for newcomers. I only read about half of it, but here are my suggestions -

Double Posting (not that important but it annoys me when some newb does it...)

A FAQ of things such as installing Scar/Srl. With links to good guides on how to do that. Heres what I think it could look like (if you want you can add it )

Having trouble becoming an SRL Junior Member? Go here - http://www.villavu.com/forum/showthr...=16653?t=18269

Want an SRL stats ID? Go here - http://www.villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13896

Having trouble getting Scar? Go here - http://www.villavu.com/forum/showthr...t=setting+scar

Want to keep up-to-date with the latest SRL updates? Go here - http://www.villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17929

Having trouble getting a script to run? Make sure you read this - http://www.villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2071

Maybe a few more things. I know this is supposed to be about SRL - Forums, but if you add those few lines, it could be a full guide on Scar, SRL, and the forums.

Thanks for the feedback guys I'll update it and give you credits

Also this is meant to be a guide to SRL forums, not really scripting, so I think you guys have given me fairly on topic suggestions.

EDIT: Runescapian there is an FAQ on the forums maybe I should add that to the tutorial?

I'm sorry that you didn't take anything from it, but at least you replied. Anything you notice that needs to be added or expanded upon?

I don't believe that section of the forum was here when I posted it... If the mods would like to move it thats up to them, it doesn't bother me in any way.

Anything you think I should add?

It was aimed at the mods... because I thought they moved everything around.

And no, I think it has everything needed

nice guide! I didn't know anything about ISpy and subscribing to a thread. Thanks for telling me about that. By the way, that ISpy thing is nifty. That took me a long time to read... I wonder how long it took you to write. Nice job! Rep ++

Yea, iSpy is a really nice tool! I don't subscribe to a lot of threads unless It a big discussion of some sort but it's still nice to have. It took a while to write, but it's helped quite a few people so it was definitely worth it.
