Um, it would take a really long time for a laptop to make up the difference in price between it and a desktop with equal specs.

Oh, and another reason to get a desktop. If you ever want to upgrade it in the future, you can easily. Good luck doing that with a laptop, unless it's just RAM.

The vast majority of laptops are not easy to upgrade. A lot of them also can't be upgraded. Yours is the exception, not the rule.

You call, a notebook cooler, some stickers, and a paint job customization?!
I guess it is, but NOT the type bullz was talking about. Also, the alienware swapping video cards....first you have to have an alienware, which are way to over-priced. I would like to see you take the "portable" tower to the bathroom, or to the mall, or to class with you....that's just a stupid thing to have pointed out. And the "less electricity thing?! Are you serious...? That is just a silly thing to add in there, no reason, whatsoever....wow dude, just wow

Are you saying that if you build it, it's more expensive? Definitely not.

Still not as good cooling as a desktop, but those things do help a lot.

    Laptops can swap parts:
    - Alienware graphics cards are swappable
    - Ram is easy to upgrade
    - Hard drives are just as easy
Normally the graphics card is integrated. Yes, you can upgrade RAM, but not usually to how much a desktop can handle. Hard drives are easy to swap, yes. Can you do things such has run multiple in RAID though? I have never looked that up...

I think you misunderstood what I meant by "customizable". I meant parts-wise, not looks-wise.

    Made me laugh

Pretty cool, but has nothing to do with this.

EDIT: @Brain, yeah, Alienware is horribly overpriced. I was looking at one at BestBuy, and it was equal to mine, maybe even a little worse, and it was more than twice the price. You pay for the Alienware logo.

Well, to be fair there are such things as "portable desktops". But all those are are regular desktops stuffed into really small cases.

Sorry.... but I was just trying to have fun... I was being extremely sarcastic and trying to get some laughs.... Yes desktops can do way better for the money put into them... If you personally barebonesded a laptop it would be close to the same price of a desktop of same compatibility and efficiency.... For the most part.... if you look good enough laptops are not really customable... just the insides (for certain companies only) and the outside color.... Really the only thing that can be changed in a laptop is the ram (rarely over 6-8) and the hard drive.... Actually I have never come across a laptop that does not allow for some upgrade to the system = not exception.... = a rule.... the evertek website was just a link to show that you can buy indavidual parts.....Alienware laptops are way overpriced; the only way to get a cheap one is to buy a stolen one off ebay and crack the admin password off.....for electricity, yes that was valid; it was suggesting gas or other source = not electricity = I win....

Sorry for anybody who got their panties all in a bunch over that.

Like I said... I think desktops are the better way to go.... unless you want mobility... the strap was just a funny gesture....

I would suggest a tower for running the server and have it on all the time with an extreme battery backup and a few terabytes of hard drive space available... and for a laptop ... best buy and ebay make some pretty good deals.....

Protip: Sarcasm doesn't translate well over the internet. If you do nothing to indicate sarcasm, no one will know it's sarcastic.

Good luck trying to find decently priced barebones parts for laptops. Often times, that'll become much more expensive then getting a standard one.

You've never looked that many prebuilt laptops, have you? The cheapest of them often allow nothing other than the RAM and maybe the HDD to be swapped out. And even higher end ones usually don't allow you to replace more than that, either. You see, most have no place to put anything else.

I'm sorry, but you win what exactly? I wasn't aware that there was anything to "win".

Ahh... well note to self, "state sarcasm before I even talk... or at least in that post.." thanks for the tip...

Buying wholesale items (example < www.evertek.com >) will get you a decent barebones laptop (I am not saying that it is the best way to go.... or that all of the items can be found on that site). If you are going to barebones a laptop it will be because you want it to be better than what is on market .... therefore will probably cost more anyway....Is doubling or even tripling the ram on a computer not an upgrade.... it certainly would run a bit faster... and ... is "upgrading" the hard drive from a single 80gb to a single 500gb or (if able to) dual 500gb not an upgrade also?.... and "I win".... sorry... but my sad attempt to being sarcastic over the internet again...

I hope I don't offend anybody seriously... seriously.

The problem with what you posted is that site is for resellers only. Meaning most people can't buy from them.

As for the upgrading, note that I've been saying other than the RAM and HDD. I've already acknowledged the fact that those can be upgraded. But what if you want to upgrade your processor? Or graphics card?

O_o Where'd you find that for just 350? Or is it one of those 'mini' laptops?

EDIT: Oh, my bad, senrath pointed out that you said Ebay

I'm guessing Ebay. I think that's what he said, anyway.

It's several questions you need to ask youself, and theese is only a few:

What am i going to use it to?
Am i going to move it around the house?
How much am i willing to pay?
    ETC

So i suggest you to visit a store that sells computers and talk to them

I only have a laptop - so I have no choice. I usually use it plugged in most of the time, and I only just found out you can use it with the battery out, while it's plugged in! Also that the batteries have wear and tear..
