Default Can not install Ubuntu on my box

    Halp.

Okay, hi. Well, I have an Ubuntu livecd, it is not corrupt, and neither is my memory. I go to install it, and I get "/usr/bin/ubiquality-dm line 208 [and] line 114 XServer exited with return code str(status) return code 1." (an error similar to that).

After about a few minutes, it opens just a blank terminal like what happens when you SSH into a box. What command should I run to get my Ubuntu working? The box is a Dell Dimension 2400, if that is relevant information. Someone help me please

I have tried "rm -rf /*"'ing the box a few times, has not helped. Also tried running it without a HD in. Also, the CD works fine on another box, and the CD Drive is fine, as WINdows can install fine on it. Running "startx" does not help..

    kthx.

k, after reading your problem, here's what i recommend:

    1. obtain a large hammer
    2. open box, remove case from box
    3. remove any valuable items from box, such as keys, dildos, pr0ns, etc.
    4. take box and hammer outside
    5. beat box with hammer
    6. throw box in dumpster
    7. ????
    8. PROFIT (afaik)

    hope this works for you

If you have windows, use WUBI.
If you can't install 9.04, install 8.10 and then upgrade to 9.04.
    Hope this helps.
PM me if you need any help with math.
I can try to help you with anything!

The thing is, I can not even open a GUI to do anything. Also, I do not want the Windows files, that is why I rm -rf'd. I just want to install Ubuntu onto the box, I am planning on making a small server with the low-power box.

I must say that is cute, but it will not help my problem

Yes, it is the Desktop version. Also, the Server version would not cause an error like that, as there is no difference between my PC and a server.

did you get a GUI when you ran the CD and are not getting a gui after install or is there no gui when running the CD but a terminal instead??

also do you have your heart set on ubuntu? it is very good and very user friendly, but so is fedora :-)

I have had a few Dell boxes have close to the same problem. I think Dell's hardware is just spooky or something.

I got a GUI and I chose to install it. I tried the "text only" mode and it left me with a black screen after hours.

I might try Fedora if I can not get Ubuntu working after a few days.

try ubuntu 8.04, in 8.10 they changed the video drivers to mesa, and i did hear there were some people have issues with it (didnt follow too closely). 8.04 has pretty much all the same bells and whistles. in my experience i would use fedora or ubuntu. i tried opensuse and wow.... its good if you dont plan on installing... anything...

Tried using the alternate ISO? It uses a more basic input gathering method and sometimes works when the normal version fails.

Can someone link me to a distro that has no GUI in it at all, so I can be 100% sure I am not accidentally installing one?

You can use Damn Small Linux, which only has the basic GUI - http://www.damnsmalllinux.org
Otherwise, I know the Gentoo minimal ISO has no GUI as well as being small (around 90mb) - http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml

Would this install have no GUI?

I do not want to mess around with any ISO that has a GUI at all, I think that is the only problem.

The alternate disc, by default, is just a text based version of the normal ISO, so it still installs a GUI. There's probably an option you can set at the install screen to disable installing X and Gnome, but looking it up on the Ubuntu forums would be the safest bet.
Edit: Server install is pretty basic though if I remember - not 100% sure on it's lack of X & Gnome though.

Alternate has a nice text installer, and it actually looks like it is working :3 Thanks for the halp.
