If your computer can handle GNOME pretty well (my 2GHz with 1GB RAM computer runs it fine) you can make it look really nice.

http://www.dividebyzerochan.org/images/Screenshot-1.png
You just have to remember to install compizconfig-settings-manager. Also, Add/Remove Programs is much better than the windows "look for the website then download the installer then virus scan it then install it" method
http://www.dividebyzerochan.org/images/screenshot4.png
Ubuntu is also the midway point between Vista's paranoia and XP's "I'll let you do everything regardless of who you are."
Also, the only time you need to restart Ubuntu is when you install graphics card drivers or update your kernel (and even then, you don't really need to reboot if you know how, but that's complicated)
Edit: I use a 50ft ethernet cable and I use my second ethernet port to bridge the connection to my server, so I can't really say anything for wireless.
That's what I don't want. Lol.
Yeah for the short time I used it, that was the big thing I noticed, everything that I would need is really simple to install.
EDIT: After a long conversation with Shut about Ubu, it seems to be the better choice. If you think otherwise, speak now, or forever hold your peace.![]()

I have Ubuntu on my desktop as well as XP and I like it. I don't use it enough really to be able to switch to it permanently.I find it to be a hard choice though as they both have advantages over each other.
If you are looking for speed, then go with MO 2007. (OO is quite the memory eater, your laptop will be a little slow running multiple OO documents.) In addition, it takes forever to get it started, especially open office draw.
In addition to just MSWord, you also have Onenote 2007 with MO.
But as someone already pointed out, using wine will likely slow down applications than in native windows. So Windows for speed. I still think you should consider Dual-boot, at least for a little while...to see which one you prefer. "Especially since Ubuntu is free."

Well.... Yeah.... Ubuntu.
If you want to use SCAR in a native windows environment, install Virtualbox. (www.virtualbox.org, and is the package manager.)

Exactly!
It also comes with PowerPoint and Excel. I already know kind of what Ubu is about (I duel boot on my desktop), and put I don't think I should duel boot on my laptop for fear of making it even slower.
It's interesting you say Windows for speed, pretty much everyone else has said Ubuntu.
Thanks Wiz.
Yeah, well when I was talking to Shut, he suggested booting from the live CD just to see if it works, which I think is a good idea, so I might try that.
So throughout this discussion I'm come up with these questions/conclusions.
1: Wireless internet shouldn't be a problem.
2: Is running a Windows app slower through Wine, than in regular Windows?
3: For overall speed, Windows or Ubuntu?
Comments?

Vista. But ubuntu is > XP because XP has more bugs and loopholes - easier for a hacker to get into your system. So i voted Ubuntu in this case

I have Vista now, and my computer can't handle it. It always freezes, I get tons of errors, and I can't barely run SMART without massive lag.
EDIT: I'm running off the Live CD now, and obviously I had no trouble connecting to Wireless so that's good.
And TBH, even on the Live CD, it runs faster than my Vista (or seems to be at least.).

You have got to be trolling. Honestly, if you think that XP (with the latest security updates, of course) has more bugs than Vista...you need to get institutionalized.
And yes, Wireless etc should work fine.
I see no reason why you would even WANT to run Windows programs on Ubuntu; there are many better alternatives of *NIX.
If you do want to use WINE (which I only use for WinRAR, I like it better than the Ubutntu Unrarer), then check out this list for your app. http://appdb.winehq.org/

You can't blame anyone for that. People still think Java is slow even though it's only barely slower than native bytecode now. Vista also has a cluttered, confusing, disorganized, and slow user interface (and personally I think it's just plain ugly as well). Everyone's in love with Win7 only because it's not Vista.
WINE runs like 80% of programs. You can run a wine program from the terminal and see any output -- which is good, as most program errors are simply a missing DLL. So you download the DLL and off you go.

No, the card is very good (not high end, but very good for the price). It's a known problem, and nobody has had major success getting it to work in Ubuntu yet AFAIK.
Then go with Ubuntu, but I'd really suggest installing a tiny XP partition for now, in case you manage to screw up Ubuntu and can't boot.. but I guess you could just boot from the live CD.

Just dual boot it?
It can't hurt, I am going to reinstall my pc too soon.
~Hermen
Too late.
And I didn't want to cause TBH I installed Ubuntu because I was sick of Vista. If I kept it on this computer I would never use it again, and it would just be wasted space, not to mention I don't have a lot of space on my hard drive to begin with. I doubt having two OS would be a good idea.

bullzeye, might I suggest you install ndiswrapper? Even if you have a driver that works, I imagine ndiswrapper would help b/c you'd be using the windows driver.
Also, you should do that if you have problems anyway.

Yes, I have tried it and it didn't work. However I think I figured out a couple days ago that the reason it's not working is because I'm running Ubuntu x64, and there are no x64 drivers that work with ndiswrapper. So one of these days I'm gonna wipe my existing installation and install x84 Ubuntu.
So even though you're running Ubuntu it's still a Windows driver problem?
