Simple, you get a group of people togather with a fair amount of money, they start buying a perticular item for the max price in GE, the GE system then thinks that there is a high demand for the product and not enough supply(cause why else would people buy at the max price), so it puts the price up. if you are still confused try reading a basic version of the demand and supply in the economics section.

Thats how you make small amounts of money, unreliably. The people making the most money out of this are the leaders of clans, who often have multiple bill's of gold and assets. What happens is:

    1. Leader of clan buys alot of an item for max either by themselves, or with another private clan (often requiring hundreds of mill to join - I'm in one which requires 300m+ cash to join).
    2. If they manage to "buy out" the item from the GE, meaning no more of that item are in the GE, and are able to sustain buying all of the item that is put into the GE each day at max (or even if they sustain putting in lots offers at max each day), the item's price rises dramatically, much more than if people were simply buying at max without the item being bought out.
    3. So now the person or clan has alot of items that are raising alot each day. So far, its just like a normal merchant clan.

Once the item reaches a price the player is happy with, they either:

    A) Release the item details to a public clan, telling them that it's the new item. This means alot of people will be putting in offers for max, so the person/priv clan dump the items in the GE at max - allowing the clan to buy all the items and therefore making the original person a large profit, while the clan continues to buy and keeps the price raising by a bit themselves ("normal" merchanters can make a small amount of this, but most people lose money when its dumped). This is how clans like 2lum work, but about a week ago the owner 2lum dumped the item he told his private clan was the next item on them (instead of waiting to dump on the public) - meaning 2lum made a massive profit while his private clan had massive losses because the item decreased in price rapidly. Which led to mass rage, and stuff.

    B) Sell the items on the street as "risings", meaning items which are going up alot. People often sell rares for large amounts of risings, in hope that they will profit off the clan's merch - but generally once the clan/person dumps alot into the street, people put on GE for min, so the people who got the risings end up usually losing money. Risings are often added to items which have a street value well above their market price, in order for more cash to be added - Eg someone would sell an easter egg + 200m worth of junk (rising or not) for 230m cash. The clan profits in this way because of the fact they bought the majority of their items at a low price, before they were bought out - so the 200m in junk might of cost 130m cash or something, giving them a 70m profit and leaving the person with the egg and alot of junk they cant get rid of as it loses value rapidly and wont sell on GE. Risings are more valued than stable or crashing junk, but theyre basically a short-term investment for people who think they can get rid of them before the major dump/price decrease (which can be done, sometimes).

So basically to make substantial money you have to have alot of starting money yourself, and either scam alot of people (A) or have items which can be sold with junk for high prices so you can get rid of it before it crashes (B).

ahhhh i think that just happened to me. bummer that i didn't read this beforehand. I joined a clan, and bought the item at max. its been about 5 days, and it just petered off for the first time, and ive been trying to sell yesterday cause ive been suspicious, but it hasn't sold. I looked at the graph, and it was already rising before the released the 'new' item. I still have the item for sale at lowest, and hopefully they will find new people to buy, cause they advertise it to go from 2k to 6k, and its at 3.3k right now. ah is there any way to even got some of my money back?

This has happened to a lot of people, and yes you will get some money back, it should take at max like 2-3 weeks or when the price of the item has become stable. The way to check if these clan's you join are for real you just need to check the GE database to make sure the item isn't already peaking above the usual amount and the graph has been plateaued (steady) for a month or so. One clan that I think is true to their merchanting word is 'smokin mils' I'm sure, they have been on this ne item for at least 5 weeks. (So if you choose to join wait till the next item starts).

    Many Thanks
