We live on a planet that is all but perfect for our kind of life: not too warm and not too cold, basking in kindly sunshine, softly watered; a gently spinning, green and gold harvest-festival of a planet. Yes, and alas, there are deserts and slums; there is starvation and racking misery to be found. But take a look at the competition. Compared with most planets this is paradise, and parts of Earth are still paradise by any standards. What are the odds that a planet picked at random will have these complaisant properties? Even the most optimistic calculation will put it at less than one in a million.

Imagine a spaceship full of sleeping explorers, deep-frozen would-be colonists of some distant world. Perhaps the ship is on a forlorn mission to save the species before an unstoppable comet, like the one that killed the dinosaurs, hits the home planet. The voyagers go into the deep-freeze soberly reckoning the odds against their spaceship's ever chancing upon a planet friendly to life. If one in a million planets is suitable at best, and it takes centuries to travel from each star to the next, the spaceship is pathetically unlikely to find a tolerable, let alone safe, haven for its sleeping cargo.

But imagine that the ship's robot pilot turns out to be unthinkably lucky. After millions of years the ship does find a planet capable of sustaining life: a planet of equable temperature, bathed in warm starshine, refreshed by oxygen and water. The passengers, Rip van Winkels, wake stumbling into the light. After a million years of sleep, here is a whole new fertile globe, a lush planet of warm pastures, sparkling streams and waterfalls, a world bountiful with creatures, darting through alien green felicity. Our travellers walk entranced, stupefied, unable to believe their unaccustomed senses or their luck.

As I said, the story asks for too much luck; it would never happen. And yet, isn't it what has happened to each one of us? We have woken after hundreds of millions of years asleep, defying astronomical odds. Admittedly we didn't arrive by spaceship, we arrived by being born, and we didn't burst conscious into the world but accumulated awareness gradually through babyhood. The fact that we gradually apprehend our world, rather than suddenly discovering it, should not subtract from its wonder.

Of course I am playing tricks with the idea of luck, putting the cart before the horse. It is no accident that our kind of life finds itself on a planet whose temperature, rainfall and everything else are exactly right. If the planet were suitable for another kind of life, it is that other kind of life that would have evolved here. But we as individuals are still hugely blessed. Privileged, and not just privileged to enjoy our planet. More, we are granted the opportunity to understand why our eyes are open, and why they see what they do, in the short time before they close forever.

    ...

After sleeping through a hundred million centuries we have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with colour, bountiful with life. Within decades we must close our eyes again. Isn't it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up in it? This is how I answer when I am asked — as I surprisingly often am — why I bother to get up in the mornings. To put it the other way round, isn't it sad to go to your grave without ever wondering why you were born? Who, with such a thought, would not spring from bed, eager to resume discovering the world and rejoicing to be a part of it?

    ~Unweaving the Rainbow, Richard Dawkins

Not my words, but the above prose expresses it so beautifully I feel I would ruin it if I tried to rewrite it.

I have no sympathy for the situation because everyone goes through the same thing's at some point in their life. Babying someone and feeling sorry for them doesn't do anyone any good.

Life is bullshit. Your either good or bad, happy or sad, rich or poor, smart or dumb, lowlife or achiever, winner or loser, in love or lonely, hardworking or bum.. Whats the point when you only live to be judged and tested?

To make it the best damn life ever!

That's exactly right, there is nothing anyone can do about. Especially if they are the type that complain and moan about how bad there life is. Dervish I'm going to help you out a bit...
Do you have a house that you live in? Yes.
Do you have food on the table, or you can make whenever you want it? Yes.
You have the internet, you have a lot of stuff that other people don't have. Seriously man, get over yourself. Not trying to be a d!ck or anything, but your life can be a lot worse than what it is. So stop with the emo stuff and just live life to the fullest. Everyone has to die sometime, we all know that, so why b!tch about it. And yeah so what about love, you are going to get your heartbroken a lot more than what you think. And if you keep looking at things like you are then it's most likely going to be your fault because the girl will start thinking your not interested if you push yourself away, or you're constantly up her ass about who she is with and where she is going. It's called trust, and if you can't get over yourself and start trusting then you're going to be a lonely lonely guy. There is no point, the only thing you're doing is rambling on about stuff that we already know and have all come to live with.

Edit: Man 10 posts as I was writing that. I think too much sometimes lol

It depends on who you are. If you want it to be fun you can make it fun.

For religious people or people with a religion, life is for worshiping god and enjoying life as much as possible.

But hey I bet if you were to tell one of the million starving familys in Africa about your life, in there minds, they will know for sure yours has a lot of meaning and you are living an incredible life compared to there's. I mean seriously. 40% of Africa's population has aids...
Faith is an oasis in the heart which will never be reached by the caravan of thinking.

Thanks arabian! I was waiting for some to play the "well it could be a LOT worse card"

So yeah, at least you have running water.

At least you aren't raped every day.

At least you aren't in solitary confinement.

At least you have access to a computer.

At least you live in a country that respects individual rights.

At least you know how to read.

At least you aren't deaf and blind.

At least you don't have terminal cancer.

At least you weren't born horribly disfigured.

The list goes on... Is your life really that bad?

Honestly sorry for the guilt trip I know this doesn't actually help at all.

Sometimes it helps to take a sick day and just jerk off. Better yet, smoke some pot, if you can't get laid, then just jerk off. Smoke more pot. Jerk off more. By the end of the day, you'll be so worn out and felt that release, you'll get over this pain.

By the way, why are you focusing on the downsides to everything? Those are the first steps to a future mental disorder. It sounds like you're depressed and we've all had those kinds of days and sometimes they last longer than days but you have got to find ways to get away from whatever pain you're feeling.

When I felt emotional trauma, I escaped my life problems by resorting to extreme gaming. It was extremely unhealthy to my interpersonal skills and when we escape we just avoid our life problems. The trick is to identify them and find out a way to solve them. Goals are what improve our lives and the possibility of a better life when those goals are completed, create motivation.

I was serious when I said to jerk off. Exercise is known to practically cure depression. So figure it out, get motivated, and get off your ass and start enjoying life. Wish you the best.

I honestly think it is funny that you bring your own personal problems to an online forum and as previously mentioned, your '"poetic" emo blabbering'. But hey you can do what you want, you're obvious young and having doubts about the world.
I see you noticed GoF's intervention there, and cannot complain about you doing that, but I can however, complain because you take the words he took to annoy me.

I think its the judgements of other people which makes things worse more than anything else, you do not choose how you look, how you are, how you feel, you don't even choose to live !

And when bullshitters like them in my school come to annoy me because of my attitude, my look and my physical deficiencies (mainly constant light Aménie[french]), I cannot think anything but that my life sucks.

Your post is somewhat like kingarabian's... Playing the "it could be so much worse" card. (who said this ? Thank you)

Kingarabian : I didn't choose who I am, how the fxck could I make my life fun when people around me do nothing but bash, judge, and push me low ?

Ignore them ? Fuck that, yes, I just said fuck, because people do nothing but say "ignore them", how would that make them stop ?! I ignore most of the insults and judgements I get, but sometimes its too much.

I do gaming since this happened... Yes, before I was a RuneScape fan (but thats not even a game !) but I've jumped over to more exciting and intense games, which help me escape from my problems, from the real world until its finally time to go to school again, take another beating, insults, and shed more tears.

Exercise... I could do that I guess, to a limited extent, although I do not see how it would help me.

    Thanks Ron.

Don't knock it till you try it.

There is a meaning to life if you construct one. Get objectives, ambitions, goals, and in a daily basis try to do as much crazy shit as you can afford.

You might be going through a nervous breakdown, if so I reaaaaally suggest you get some help from a good doctor if you know one.

If you are thinking of ending it, I'll have to tell you, wait for a few years. When you get through a nervous breakdown, the first year is entirely made of candy, as you find yourself renewed.

Never stop learning. Never stop living. High school is taken too seriously by most kids : if you get beat up, just snitch to your parents and school director and everything. You'll get compassion, and maybe your parents will let you go to a kung fu/boxing/MMA class

I'll add you on MSN, I'm an advisor for people who like to do crazy shit and find out how to live life the way they love it.
I don't check this place often, sorry.
