Not going to go into detail.
Stability- PS3
Games- 360
Performance- PS3
Extras- 360
They're both decent consoles.
Have you considered buying a gaming computer?
Assuming the computer you use right now can game decently, you can LAN or play online games with each other.
I think they're both pretty stable.
I think the game preference may just be opinion, you should check out some you're interested in to see which consoles they're for.
For performance, I'm not too sure, but I know my 360 heats up a lot, nothing besides that.
I think xbox 360 may have more extras, there are tons of things on live you can get.

PS3 = Free to play online...

ps3 = free to play online (kids making 5,000k accounts and screaming with their annoying voices)
xbox360 = better games and $5 a month for xbox with a better community
Xbox all the way haha

If it's for both you and your wife, and you two aren't hardcore gamers, I'd go for a Wii =)
If not, then perhaps a PS3 in terms of more functionality.
If you want quality online don't go with PS3.

Depends on how much you want to spend otherwise there pretty much the same except for the price. The only thing is if you want blu-ray for movies. Personally I think blu-ray looks to realistic its like realer then real which makes no sense that's why I hate it lol.
Personally I like the xbox better, controller is just like moulded for your hands as the ps3 is a cut down tree with analog sticks put on made into a smaller scale.

Seeing as I hate xbox at the moment as mine has died I'd say PS3, but on a normal day I'd say xbox because there is a load of nifty arcade games and a far better online community; we pay for ours therefore the online services we are provided is better![]()
Jus' Lurkin'
I have both a PS3 and XBox 360.
I would say recently the XBox 360 'community' has been building but to me they have been buildling a lot like the Nintendo Wii has their community. All these little extra things along with the added 'Mii' (as Wii calls them) that you can customize to look how you want. Xbox 360 also has the whole Netflix on demand straight from the console which is pretty nice if you are a movie goer.
Now the PS3 does also have a 'community' but it isn't as largely displayed on their console's mainscreen. You have to navigate through to kind of take advantage of it (but honestly I could care less). PS3 also has internet navigation (through a browser) via the console which is a cool added bonus. Overall the PS3 community is nice too.
As for the consoles/gaming experience:
Xbox360 has a wider variety of games which is nice when trying to get games but also a lot of those games seem to be 'knock off' games that are made for little to no entertainment. Both systems get the games that everyone wants so it's not that much of an advantage. You pay $5/month for online play or $50/year.
PS3 doesn't have as many games but has the good games that people want. It also has the built in blu-ray play which is a $200 value alone (for a good blu-ray). The graphics on the PS3 I do have to say are better than that of the XBox360. The clearity is definitely noticable to a person that has both systems. The XBox360 has High-Def cables with the package while the PS3 does not so you have to either buy the cables or get a HDMI cable to use the High-Def, also it is needed for the blu-ray player. Online play is free (nice added bonus).
games:
As stated above the XBox360 has a wider variety of games but the PS3 get the big name games that people want. All the 'little' knock off games that I mentioned above are ALL available for download from the PS3 online store which than can be stored on your PS3 for further gaming.
performance:
They both perform very well. Like said, PS3 has the better graphics and it is noticable when comparing the two. Colors on the PS3 are a bit more vibrant and has a little more texture and 'extra' little things.
stability:
Stability is pretty even also. I do know the XBox360 has the whole 'red light' scare that makes your system crash but you get a new replacement if that happens (it has happened to me twice). I haven't heard of anything like that for the PS3. They both constantly get console updates to make them more stable.
extras:
Even though people say XBox360 on this one, I say it is pretty even when actually weighing out the options. XBox360 has a lot of 'extra' options right on their homescreen/mainpage. Easily accessible which is very convient. Now when comparing the extras: XBox360 has Netflix on demand though PS3 has a blu-ray player (afaik PS3 doesn't have netflix on demand). XBox360 has the 'Free Arcade' games, I don't believe that PS3 has any 'Free' system based games of the sort. None of those games are 'popular' games or anything they are just little games Microsoft gives our for free (sort of fun sometimes to mess around with). Both XBox360 and PS3 have Music players, both play dvd's, etc... I believe both system can store both music and dvd's on them (i know the PS3 can for sure store both). They also both connect to you computer to be able to get music and movies to play via the consoles.
Overall:
Both system are great gaming system. Accessories (controllers, headsets, games, etc...) are all the same prices so that isn't an issue. PS3 has the better graphics but XBox360 is continually updating their 'community' stuff which is nice to see. I personally like the PS3 for a better in-game experience and action but I like the XBox360 for an overall experience. Either way though you can't go wrong with your choice.
(I haven't had my PS3 as long as my XBox360, so I don't know all that the PlayStation Store on the PS3 has to offer, there is a lot on there though)

I have Ubuntu on my ps3
I know you can't have a second operating system on the XBox.
I have my PS3 hooked up to my HD monitor and the graphics are outstanding! THe PS3 also comes with a built-in network adapter which is better than my brother's network adapter. With XBox, you have to buy a network adapter for like $30.
