Well if you are going to buy a Zune HD you might as well buy a J3 from Cowon. I have a Cowon S9 and its basically like the first generation of the J3.

It costs 190$ at newegg.ca for the 8 gb version, BUT it comes with slot for a memory card. It has a gorgeous AMOLED screen, a 64 hour battery life for playing back music, extensive equalizer settings, plays all the good music formats (MP3/2, WMA, FLAC, OGG, APE, WAV ).

However if you plan on playing apps or browsering the web then that PMP won't be for you. It doesn't have one and it doesn't have an app store, but it does have a flash player. But I found that most flash games/apps don't work well at all on my S9. The reason why I bought the S9 even though it doesn't have wifi/apps is because it requires no proprietary software, it is a drag and drop player. And as such works on all OS's. If you want something that can have apps or go on the internet - buy a smartphone.

Who cares about the apps, he needs it for listening to music

Even people who think they will only use a device for music, will grow to like and depend on apps given the opportunity to use them.

NOTE: Apple is releasing a whole new line of Ipods ranging from Ipod nano's to Ipod touches, I HIGHLY Recommend you DO NOT but an IPod right now. The release will be in less than 3 months. Some say as early as July!
Screen is actually more responsive, its just not as big, thus not wasting battery.

Yes, App store sucks number wise, however, what apps they do have are of very good psp game quality. Plus, all apps are free.

Yes, its based off of internet explorer. It sucks, however, it has he ability to view mediocre flash in some situations. Something apple CANT do.

Zune's sychronization is a lot better. Can synch wirelessly over wifi. Auto converts anything you can throw at it to a suitable format for your player.

You cant say undoubtedly, you dont own one. Thats purely prejudice.

You have no idea if apple is releasing new ipods. They are (usually) very protective of release dates. Besides, honestly. What more useless crap can you throw on an mp3 player. I mean you already have a video camera on one... What next? A hardware feature to sterilize my heroin needles? A bandaid dispenser? I just dont see hoe they can improve on something like that without making it have something rediculous in order for it to be "new"

Maan I don't know what I want anymore.

Archos seems out of the picture, it only holds 8G max?
    https://store.archos.com/players-fi-83.html

Zune Seems Cool ($269 for 32G).
But my question to Zune owners is how useful really are all of the 'features' besides video/music playback. The browser can't even youtube, and how are the apps for it, are there even that many/that many ones worth getting?

    iPod Classic ($249 for 160G)
It seems to be where I'm leaning a bit now. It just does music/video, but it holds A LOT more than zune for appx the same price (yes it has a lot less features, but will I really be using the extra zune features?)

It just sucks that the iPod classic looks so lame.

Creative Zen didn't really seem to catch my attention.

Also, about all of this 'new iPod soon' hype, proof? If so, I will just wait until later to see what they cook up.

I thought you didn't want extra features like web browsing?

    I don't know wtf anymore .

The zune just looks SOOO good, and a few apps/radio tuner would be neat to have.
I'm just learning towards the classic, except it looks like crap, and I've had an iPod video (looks just like classic) for the past 3+ years now, normally I don't care for looks, but ugh it's lame.

I think the most practical thing for me would be the 160G Classic. If only it looked like a zune !

And yes you are right, I'm getting too caught up in stuff I don't care too much for. I was 100% happy and dandy with my iPod video, which I used strictly for music, and sometimes video.

The point is that if you only want media player, the Classic is the way to go, in terms of money and storage etc.

I have a 120GB classic, and I only have it half way full after 1.5 years. The thing is impossible to fill.

In the Zune/iPod debate, the final verdict is exceptionally easy to see in your case.

The iPod touch > Zune in terms of features, and the 64GB version is like 50 bucks more. If you're spending 250 on it anyway, the extra 50 for a superior product is worth it.

The Zune HD > Any other apple product, in terms of features and price. But that isn't a fair comparison, because it is the top end Zune. Like comparing a top of the line gaming PC with windows to a first version mac, windows will win.

In your case, you want a simple media player.

Zune is extra baggage that you don't require, leaving the iPod range, or the stuff you've already ruled out.

I'd say classic, well... It's a classic. Classic mp3 player, just the media playing, with tons of storage. Really durable, I drop mine all the time and it doesn't even really dent/scratch.

So is my J3 suggestion being ignored? As far as music playback goes, it is going to own every Apple product, and videos look really nice on AMOLED screens.

Its not going to get anywhere close to the same storage of a ipod classic though ... but why do you need 160 gb on your portable media player...

Well, personally, if a media player has less than 50GB of storage, I wont even consider it. I have 30GB of just music, and I have no desire to spend hours trimming the songs that I either wont listen to, or don't like. I also have 25GB of videos, which is semi important to me. If it doesn't have a large enough storage, I will rule it out.

If I were you, I'd just get the most memory for the cheapest that you can. (160GB == not enough for me. x])

And the thing I like a lot about my Zune HD 32G is that it looks way sexier than an iPod Touch. :3 (Or any iPod, imo, for that matter.)

Radio's also nice. And, again, battery life is much better (which is a big point if you're truly only going to be using it for music). Oh, and I never had problems with the touch screen being unresponsive or anything. I think it's just as good or better than the iPod Touch. But that Archos looked nice. :3 I like the Archos3 I think. The most touch screen one. I just wish it held more music. :/

I don't see how zune is better (besides battery life and sexyness) than the iPod Touch, it has a fragzillion apps, while zune has like 20 shitty ones?)

iPod Classic seems the best way to go, although I still don't like the look of it very much at all :/. Trying to find some 'replacement housing' for it, but I can't seem to find anything good.

E:I also hear the web browser on Zune is pewp.

1st point: Yeah, it looks gross. And large. And bulky. That's the whole classic look too though. There are cases for it that make it look less terrible, and protect it and stuff. Keep looking .

To the edit: That is also what I hear. Slower than iTouch and based on IE, which also makes it default to shitty.

    http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iPod_touch

This site is nearly dead on with predictions on when new products come out.
Rumors rnt just randomly guessed, there is usually some insider info to back it up. For example, everyone knew the iphone 4 was coming out near the end of June b4 the WWDC.

I am willing to bet ANYTHING that a new line of ipods will be released anywhere from July-September.

Your best bet YoHoJo, is to wait and compare the new ipods to other devices on the market.

Based on what you initially said (only wanting music and not caring about apps), Zune HD > iPod Touch.

The important thing is not the space, not the apps it has, not how cool it is. The important thing is how easy and fast it is to use. When I had my brother's iPod I nearly always left it home just because I found it awful to use. It had like 1 button and a touchpad around that button with which I was supposed to scroll. It sucked. Go to some store and actually try the players and their UIs.

The iPod is extremely easy to use.

You scroll your finger clockwise to go down, counterclockwise to go up. Press the button in the middle to choose. How could it get any easier?

In my iPod the scrolling was way too fast, I always missed the song I was trying to click.

In the classic that I have, I find the scrolling to be a realistic speed, if not a little on the slow side. On the other hand, I see what you mean. My friend has the nano (whatever generation produced the square ugly one) and the scrolling on it is a little fast for me.

That is really really silly. If you really want that much space you can just buy the 32GB J3/Sansa and buy a 32 GB microSD.

I don't see the point though because your never going to listen to almost 600 hours of music in the life of your device anyway.

Not like it matters, because YoHoJo doesn't even know what he wants anymore. You can buy a iPod Touch and get lots of fart applications, a few decent applications, and even fewer great ones. You can buy the Zune HD which is trying to take over the iPod Touches territory and failing hard at it, or you can buy a J3 with expandable memory, and which doesn't try to compete with either the Zune HD and iPod Touch but rather competes in its own niche.

Or if like you say you don't really want web surfing, wifi or video, you can buy like a sansa that also has expandable memory.

If battery is a real concern I really don't think you'll beat the J3. If you want wifi and apps then nothing really is going to compete with the iPod Touch, but I was willing to give that stuff up if it meant not using proprietary software and hardware. I decided that having a awesome screen + no proprietary crap > wifi & apps. At the end of the day, it is what YoHoJo really wants - and its starting to sound hell of a lot like he wants wifi and apps.
