Default USB mouse and keyboard not working in windows vista.

My friend have had this problem on his computer for a while now and I thought that maybe someone from here would know how to solve this.

They don't even get power when they are not working.
He has also tried another usb mouse and other usb ports and it's still not working.

Should he try installing new drivers? What kind of drivers?
    Please help

Edit: He has already tried formating his computer and it only helps for a while.

problem should read "windows vista not working with USB mouse and keyboard"

seriously... also, if you could give more detail that would help.. it is like calling a helpdesk and saying something is wrong please fix it . Computer specs, what keyboard, what mouse, any conversions on connection directly USB connected? stuff like that.

Yea there are. You can still buy them, they are not built as much. But there are specialized ones.

Ok, can you go into the BIOS? If you can use the USB Keyboard to navigate the BIOS, its an OS specific issue.

If you CANNOT use the USB keyboard to enter and navigate the BIOS, grab a PS2 keyboard. (Not a playstation 2 keyboard.. a keyboard with a PS2 head.. Its a circle and should be green or purple with 7 or 8 pins)
Use the PS2 keyboard to enter and navigate the BIOS. Look for USB Legacy, and enable it.

Once USB legacy is enabled, it should be fixed

Whenever the keyboard isn't working he can't even enter bios after rebooting the computer. Does that mean that something is wrong inside the computer?

Did it not work with a PS/2 keyboard? It's six pins and purple (keyboard) by the way.

If it doesn't work with a PS/2 keyboard, then something's up. I'm sure there's some way to get into BIOS still, though.

You could try reseting the motherboard. That may not help anything, but why not? x]

have you/he tried plugging in other things into the ports. thumb drives, external hard drives, et cetera?

It might be possible that your computer OS is conserving power (power saver mode or something like that) and not fully supporting the ports.

ffs, tell him to do what I said... There is no point in returning the computer if he can use a ps2 keyboard (make sure he knows its not a playstation keyboard I'm talking about) to get into the BIOS and make sure usb legacy is enabled..
