    Default Scientists create first robot with human emotions

    Scientists developed the first robot capable of showing human-like emotions, reports say.

    When Nao is sad, he hunches his shoulders. When happy, he raises his arms. He can even form bonds with people depending on how he is treated, according to The Guardian

    The robot was programmed with emotional traits by scientists at the UK’s University of Hertfordshire. “We’re modeling the first years of life," said Lola Canamero, a computer scientist at the university.

    “We are working on non-verbal cues, and the emotions are revealed through physical postures, gestures and movements of the body rather than facial and verbal expression.”

    Nao can already mimic the emotional skills of a one-year-old child and, using video cameras, can determine how close a person is to him. He also uses sensors to determine how tactile people are.

    Scientists said that in the future, robots could become companions to humans and provide support for the sick and elderly.

    Japanese researchers have led the world in advances in robotic engineering, but scientists in Europe are now concentrating on how robots can interact with humans.

    Hmm, I wonder if this would mean that people will be dating robots and develop bonds with robots in the future.... One could only imagine......

    This is some good technology being presented. I mean how do you code emotion though? You set parameters and those determine what the emotion is. Can it feel what you have not told it it is able to feel?
    On vacation in NeverLand,
    Code:
    typedef int bool;
    enum { false, true };

    We will be fine as long as no one designs a robot that can mutate, by modifying random bits in its programming the way human beings evolve. By then, robot species will branch off and Darwin's law will apply, creating successively stronger and more adapted species of robots.
    I don't check this place often, sorry.

    That's inevitable though don't you think?

    As much as this is really cool, I hope stem cell organ replacement comes first. Then I hope they find a way to make the brain live a long time. This way we can be put in different hosts and live as long as we want (throwing spirituality out the door right now).

    But to go back on topic: I'm always worried of glitches. I'd also like to know how it knows person X from person Y.

    Also, this will totally end up making love robots for sex-fiends. "Oh yeah baby" 24/7, a horny guy's dream. Women in the future will have some serious competition... I mean, what guy wouldn't like a super hot always ready to bang your brains out model like robot that always does what you want with 'emotion'? And if you say "make me a sandwich", you will get one in a minute... -- also it never ages, and you can replace them.

    Not that I'd want a sandwich after blowing a load or anything...

    There are two parts to a robot though, the hardware and the software. If the programming mutates, sure, it can become smarter than us, but unless we have alchemist robots, the hardware will stay the same (not getting any stronger)

    The article doesn't make it seem like a serious technological advancement. I can make a robot that hunches its shoulders when you move towards it too quickly or abruptly and then warms up to you when you rub its head. It's no more advanced than the pressure sensor in your phone along with the camera on the back that tells you that under the sign that says Subway there's a food shop.
