Default Remote controlling my own comp from another location

Since I'm losing my laptop soon and returning home unexpectedly:

I want to control my computer downstairs from my upstairs computer. It is over a LAN, but I haven't really set up the LAN explicity nor know how to use it to its fullest features. I have no problem navigating around a router and opening/closing ports-- so don't think I'm a total noob at network lingo! These both are on a LAN though and do go outbound/inbound properly.

Is there a program I can install to give me control of my own computer? I do not want a program that has malicious intent, I just need remote control of my OWN computer downstairs from my upstairs one. They're both towers, so I can't conveniently move them around (plus there's no space up here anyways). I'm tired of going up flights of stairs while trying to do multiple things on each computer. Transferring is a pain in the ass too.

Is there any program/code that I can use through [something here] to give me access to both my comps?

Once again: I do not want nor need malicious software, since it is my OWN computer. If I do require software that has nefarious purposes, please warn me. I don't trust certain programs, and may decide against it.

So how can I do this?

Teamviewer. Very good and not nefarious!

Edit: I set up my bots at home on my laptop at school with it.

I have been working on this for a while. I was in the process of making a computer management tut/thread when life hit me. If you would like some more help or a walk through, pm me and add me to messenger.

What I use, you can access your computer from any machine that has a web browser and internet (Linux, Windows, Mac). I do it from work, from other states, from friends computers, from my laptop, from school lab machines. It works great. And there are quality settings, for a faster connection you can dumb down the color and effects. This only changes things while you are connected. Once you have a script going, it doesn't interfere.

    Code:
    typedef int bool;
    enum { false, true };

I swear at UltraVNC, every computer here in house has it installed, which is very useful for administration purposes
I made a new script, check it out!.

Thank you to all the posts in this thread.

I should have said: Can they be free?
Teamviewer looks good but it seems like I'll have to buy their product. Am I wrong here?
UltraVNC looks free, though I haven't installed it (i'm just posting this so others can see before posting possibly 'purchase-ware')
That's interesting anonymity: Is it a program? Or something you made?

Teamviewer is free, but as long as you don't use it for a business. Its just like Avast or AVG.

    TightVNC

    Been using for 2+ years.
    Has never crashed.
    Very efficient.
Compatible with a wide variety of clients (I use TightVNC viewer on PC, androidVNC on phone)

Remote management, vpns, all setup and manageable from anywhere you have internet access. If you ever have questions, want an opinion, or want help setting it up. Feel free to ask.

You obviously want to find something that can run on VPN and not the internet if possible. Connections locally are much faster than over the internet.

Ditto IceFire. Don't use anything like TeamViewier or LogMeIn - not that they aren't both very useful programs; they simply aren't suited to this situation - because you'll have lot of unneeded latency.

by the way, what are you using for all computer stuff? (soft/hardware stuff)
VPN is totally faster, that is fairly simple too. you can remote desktop in windows or similar and chicken of the vnc or the such in mac world... This would be faster for home only stuff.
but LogMeIn provides access your computers, no matter where you are (if you have internet).

I can access all of my computers from anywhere on my network or even the internet with ssh. I also use VNC sometimes as well, but anything I normally need to do I use ssh for.

Is there one of these that isn't a program?
My school doesn't let us run executable files or CMD etc.
    No programs (period)

LogMeIn is a program you install on the computer you want to access. You can access that computer from any other computer with internet access. You do not need to install things wherever you go, just on the [one] machine. If you would like some more help or a walk through, pm me and add me to messenger.

E: Well, if that doesn't look like a broken record....

UltraVNC includes a Java Client that you can invoke from a browser. But if your school is that rough on programs I doubt you can get java access :S

If you are using Windows, you can just use Remote Desktop.

Well, you can possibly install it onto the Desktop. Some of the protections allow that.

And to your PM, I truly try, but I'm just so busy atm.
There used to be something meaningful here.

How do they restrict executables? You can't run an exe from a flash drive?

There are also flash based VNC viewers. (I've never tried them, though.)
