Why do you want a hackintosh? :s

    Just install Linux..

E: You may want to step up the processor and GFX card, those will not run all that much.. An i5 is a good choice for cost, or go AMD. For the GPU, you may want to bump it up to a 1gb DDR[3|4] build.

I like my macbook and it's more seamless if I have a mac desktop. I'm going to use bootcamp and have windows as well.

PSU would be useful, also a DVD drive if you're planning on booting that OS from a disk. You might want to up your GPU a bit, it's not really in keeping with the rest of the system. And most mac users do a lot with graphics, so...

Nice looking build though, and building PCs really isn't hard. I built one just under 2 weeks ago for the first time, was installing the OS in under 2 hours. It's like a really expensive and slightly more metallic lego.

Ah I missed PSU, thanks! don't think I need a dvd drive, I will boot from usb, and I don't use it for anything else. Also GPU, I read something about the i3, apparently it can be overclocked to 4ghz. Do you know anything about that?

    Thanks again.

Why overclock it? Just buy an AMD quad core. It's probably cheaper too.

Ive also made a couple hackintoshes.

Tip 1: Don't get an AMD processor, makes it that much more difficult. I also found it was much more volatile on my AMD.

Tip 2: Get an i5 or above

Tip 3: Try to get an EVGA gfx card, much easier to find drivers if required!

Happy hackintoshing PM if you need help!

Why PM if you can just discuss it here? I see no reason why AMD would complicate getting a hackingtosh. They both support sse3,sse4, etc. It isn't like they have a different instruction set. It's still x86(_64).

Good point! I only got 2hrs sleep so that didnt even occur to me to use the thread

And with AMD you usually have to install other patches and emulators that you don't have to on intel. That was the case on both AMD's I've done with snowleopard. I also found personally it ran smoother and less fussy on intel.

What patches, what emulators? I don't get it. They both run x86 code with the same extensions. If it makes no difference to Linux, Windows etc, why would it differ for mac???

afaik, apple purposefully tries to make it only run on intel because they're supposed to only be run on apple computers which are all intel.

It surprises me that you wouldnt know such a thing. Are you trying to make a point?

No. I'm saying that if it it runs on x86, it runs on AMD and Intel. They simply don't differ. We aren't making Simba distributions for AMD and Simba distributions for Intel either now are we? Unless Mac OS X relies on some unknown extension only provided by Intel (does it even exist, except for old ones that aren't useful) then I don't think buying AMD is bad.

If AMD does work, it's a great way to go. I recently bought a 4 core Phenom II (3.4GHz), for £120. Works really well.

AMD misses the Intel precision timers and the chipsets are different and such (and OSX goes really really deep in the hardware). A vanilla kernel doesn't even support Intel's Atom let alone AMD.
Oh and it does matter for Windows/Linux but they abstract it. The instruction set might be the same but the whole chipset behind it is far from.
I made a new script, check it out!.

I was wondering how long it would take for a 'Well Apple sucks' post. I'm calling that one close enough

IMO apple is crap compared to windows. Its only made for people who need to run very powerful(resource wise). I have windows at home and osx at school, and its a pain to use apple(i think they do everything differently just so that they can annoy windows users), but im not saying that windows is the best, its just that windows suits perfectly for the average person)

Now when you say do everything differently are you referring to the GUI?

if so that is what it looks like for pretty much all versions of linux.

It always confuses me why people go into wars about how we got here, and where we go when we die.

Windows just happens to be the platform for gaming. All the other tasks you can perform on Linux and Mac without a problem. Most Office stuff works just fine.

    *joining in apple debate*

Apple/Mac/OSX is really great as a piece of software, but I think it's heavily overpriced due to it's "fashion" factor.

Considering this thread is about hackintosh, price is irrelevant, thus good choice And you can always dual boot anyway.

many people still buy osx for hackintoshes. It's really not great. Being forced to use it in my video class for final cut is torture and i really think final cut is inferior to vegas and other options.

Im partly referring to the GUI, but mostly about 'other' stuff thats a pain in a** to do on a mac(like playing games for instance!, or creating a network(a big one)).

[slightly offtopic] I don't like apple because once you go down their path, you have to stick with them(like if you have an ipod touch, you have to have osx to develop games for it, etc)
