    Default Learning a new language.

I am currently using Rosetta Stone to learn Spanish...

Who thinks it'll work, or has used Rosetta Stone to learn a different language and had a good or bad experience with it?

    Thoughts? Comments? Wishes of luck?

@ Train : Good luck. I personally prefer Berlitz because that is what I am used to. Tell us how Rosetta Stone goes, please?

The problem is that I'm currently in Highschool, learning Spanish (because it's required!) and my teacher...well..fucking sucks at teaching...and goes about it completely wrong... so I have to learn it from an external source... or fail.

Get a textbook? My friends also agree that Rosetta Stone sucks. I've had no personal experience with it so I can't say anything.

Get another textbook? Read the reviews on it and make sure it doesn't suck.

You never know when you may end up in a country that natively speaks Spanish. So learning how to say "The cat is under the table!" may very well save your life, Train. So this is for your own good.

in my opinion, the most important thing to do as your first step is to download lots of <Language Insert> music, movies, radio, dramas, etc etc and immerse yourself in the language. You might find that this to too hardcore for your needs (Do you want to seriously learn Spanish or do you just want to get a credit?) If you want to seriously learn it, this will help you a lot.

Next thing I would say is using a SRS to memorize words. Anki is my favorite program to do this.

Starting a new game in your target language would be pretty cool, since you got that feeling of being a complete newb and not knowing what to do. Kinda like your first experiences as a baby and learning everything by repetition and experience.

I do have this one game for the PSP, its honestly amazing, i was reading the feedback and some guy in college was still using it.

it mainly focuses on vocabulary but help you learn more stuff the rosetta stone imho

It always confuses me why people go into wars about how we got here, and where we go when we die.

That actually is a very cool idea . I might try it one day. Being forced to express yourself in the language, while hearing it constantly around you, is the perfect combination for mastering a new language. Gaming taught me how to speak English, so this should work very well with any language.

That's too bad, I already know 3 out of 4, and I have no intention to learn Portuguese.

I tried Rosetta Stone - for Spanish, actually; most definitely a really old version of it - and I about died of boredom doing it. But I found that a lot of the things that I learned on it stuck with me in the long run.

If you CAN do it - I'd say it's really worth it.
but if you can't - no worries. There are other ways to learn it.

    Puedo hablar en espanol. :P

A somewhat extreme approach, but have you considered switching languages, so you get a different language teacher? Most US highschools (I am assuming you're in the US) are required to offer German, French, and Spanish. I suggest you switch to German if your Spanish teacher sucks. German is pretty fun I think.

I have Spanish, Chinese, and French (available to take). I was considering French, but it would be completely useless... at least in the US you can tell what those damn foreigners are saying behind your back at the store. ;-;.

Chinese, then? Mandarin is hard as fuck, but it's the most widely used language in the world, and that's not gonna change any time soon, in my opinion. I'd say go for it.

Also, the game idea is good. I did that when I was learning Spanish. Luckily, I love hentai/manga (anime is *okay* I guess.. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I've always loved hentai), and I really like the Japanese language, so I study it when I can. :3 I'm planning on doing what Capricorn said (really, it's a great method if you want to actually learn the language, as text books don't capture the emotion or pronunciation of anything. And hearing voice actors in an acoustic room isn't the same as a live action tv show, really.

:3 I'm excited to learn moar Japanese.
