Looks like a similar triangle problem. On the large triangle, you have the small leg AC with size 12 and the hypotenuse AB with size 36. On the smaller one, you have hypotenuse AC with size 12 and are missing the small leg AD. You can set up a proportion as follows (or really any way as long as you're consistent) to figure out the missing side:
smaller leg / smaller hypotenuse = larger leg / larger hypotenuse
See below if you're stuck.
AD / AC = AC / AB
AD / 12 = 12 / 36
AD = 1 / 3 * 12 = 4

or if you would prefer to do trig....
(sin-1(12/36))= about 19.5 so Angle B=19.5
Triangle has to equal 180, so 180-19.5-90= 70.5
70.5= Angle A
so Cos(70.5)=x/12
x=4![]()
