Default Best VNC/Remote access for Ubuntu

    SOLVED

I just got a server, I installed that latest LST version of Ubuntu on it.
I'm trying to setup a way that i can remote access(full control, mouse, keyboard, display) it from my laptop which is running windows 7. Teamview works in wine but if it crashes im fucked. I need something native.
I'm planning on never "physically" using the server and will set everything up to auto remotely.
Don't make me put windows xp on it... I may though as windows-windows remote desktopping is so so so streamlined.

if you have a program in mind please be sure it meets the following criteria:
    Starts on boot
Takes full control of the remote computer
Will allow remote access even if ubuntu has not logged into the user
Once setup will allow easy remote access

    Discussion/comments/suggestions please (:

If someone helps me today i'll throw in a pixel cookie

Can be easily done. Click on system at the top then preferences then click on Remote Desktop.

Can all be done from there. Then you can use the free VNC viewer to control it.

Ubuntu comes with a remote desktop thing? Do what cycrocism said.
Also, Teamviewer does support Linux natively....32-bit or 64-bit.
You can make almost any program/code/whatever start on boot. I think I used tightvncserver for one of mine...

What are you planning on using this server for? You might not even need to have GNOME/KDE/LXDE/XFCE/just X for anything and just use SSH. Those use a bit of resources that could be used elsewhere .

    Edit: Also, LST = LTS.

Open the port? Get a VPN? Etc. Try tightvncserver.

If it is saying network only then go to your router and open port 5900.

i'd have to buy a new router, that one's old ass netgear POS.

EDIT: So i was sick of not getting a native VNC setup easily on ubuntu, so i installed winblows...
well after i spent 45 minutes trying to find Ethernet drivers, i said fuck it and put Ubuntu back on
I have teamview running in wine but imo thats pretty un-stable. it crashes every once in a while.

Get yourself ssh access. It's the best fallback.

The best way to contact me is by email, which you can find on my website: http://wizzup.org
I also get email notifications of private messages, though.

Also +1 for ssh. I do everything via ssh. You become un-reliant on a gui and it makes everything more reliant and less resource intensive.

You don't need to port forward if you're only accessing from the local network. Which router do you have? Almost all let you port forward.

My point exactly, so just use VNC like I suggested a few days ago. Look at my previous post(s) they will explain to you how to easily set it up on Ubuntu

i need remote access, if all i wanted was access from the same network i'd just get off my lazy ass and plug a monitor and keyboard into the server.

I'm never at the physical location.

Your router, but nevermind on that. I misread your first post, I thought you wanted to access it from the Internet. If it was only from the LAN, then yeah no need to forward any ports.

apparently you are the only one that originally read my post RIGHT...
I do want to access it from a different network, obviously over the internet.

I am confusing myself. Sorry, anyways, then you do need an open port (5900/5901). I find it hard to believe your router won't let you forward a port......
