    Default Power Saving Techniques

    Hey there,

There are many who auto every night before they get to sleep, there are also others who auto 24/7.

The question is simple. What settings/steps do u do on your computer such that u are saving power and you do not blow your pc on the long run?

    Cheers!

PS: Apology if this was posted earlier or if this is in the wrong section.

Make sure your CPU coolers work, and are not dirty, you should clean and oil them if they make noise. (You wont believe how dirty can it be!).

I had my 2.8ghz station melt down after 30 days of non stop working

30 days non-stop???? WTF dude, you're an auto-maniac . I usually don't auto 24/7, I run several VM's and shut down my comp automatically every 18 hours and give them about 6 hrs of time (use shutdown.exe -t command). I got 4 dedicated comps running, and I plan on putting more VM's on them.

So far, all of my comps have been running fine for about 2 months.

So, here's what I actually do:

If you're really worried about cooling, get liquid cooling if you have the money. It's what l337 people do . And also, always give your comp at least 2 hrs of rest (completely off!). Try not to overdo it, and if you want to really prolong CPU life, set the clock cycle lower in the BIOS (will get you performance lapses, but lasts longer).

Use good harddrives that are durable. If you auto, your HDD will wear. Your HD won't need a lot of memory, but it should be arround 5 gigs.

Get a TON of RAM. You'll need it for VM's. I'd say about 4 slots of DDRRAM with 2 gig each. Doesn't need to be very fast; remember, RS is a slow game.

A weak videocard will do. Get something that is cheap and effective.

In general, the main cost of your comp will be the RAM and the motherboard. Best would be to use old components from computers that businesses throw out; if you ask them, they can sometimes give you computers 5 or 6 years old for FREE. All you need to do is upgrade the RAM and maybe the OS and you're good to go.

    It's been a while... but I'm BACK!!!

To save on electricity and heat, there is a cool utility called "RMClock" which will allow your computer to underclock itself if you're not using 100% of the CPU.

Ahh that's some great techniques. But what about internally? I mean, lets not talk about oiling the hardwares and stuff. More like, what can I configure on my computer such that it saves power?

Get RMClock first. As I said, it will dynamically underclock your CPU if you're not using all your computing power.

So, let's say you're running SCAR and RS, and your computer has a 50% CPU load. That means that half those CPU clock cycles are wasted and unnecessary. Some people use programs like SETI @ Home to use up those extra un-used clock cycles. But if you have RMClock installed then your computer underclocks your CPU so you don't have those extra wasted clock cycles at all. And if you open another program and you need more of that CPU power back, it will dynamically provide as much processing as you need.

If you're constantly running at 100% CPU load, RMClock won't do anything for you, but if not then you can save power and heat by having it installed.

I think that the Cool 'N' Quiet technology with Athlon 64s underclocks the CPU when it isn't being used so turn that on if you have it. I read that sometimes it doesn't put it back upto the normal speed afterwards but with runescape this shouldn't matter.

Well mine is DIY made. It has 4 cooling fans. I'm still worried about overheating though.

I was wondering, how much power does the computer consume hourly?
