Will the world end on 21st December 2012?

Im more afraid of all the looting and the lunatics running around then I am the world actually ending. If it does end im pretty sure it will have something to do with the solar flares or some other sun related event. Or just someone fires a nuke and everyone retaliates until all the nukes are I'm the air at one time and we don't stand a chance.

Don't you think in 4-5billion years we'd have enough advance technology to fly faster than the speed of light or simply teleport? Or get giant rockets and haul our planet away?

A lot of people here are comparing this time to the other times people have predicted the end of the world. This time is different because it's the end of the Mayan calendar. The Mayans were apparently a very smart civilization, that had technology that wasn't available again until hundreds (maybe thousands, I can't remember) years after they died out. I'm curious as to why the calendar all of the sudden ends.

I don't think the world is going to end, but I think it makes it more believable because there is some ancient history behind it. Definitely more believable then "all electronics will stop."

Apparently it seems intuitive that no human (including Einstein/ppl with 200 IQ) will ever be able to predict doomsday (as far as science goes).

This prediction is no different from previous (failed) ones, other than that it gets more publicity due to usage of mass media in 21 century.

The Mayans predicted it, WITHOUT leapyear.
Which means, their years are shorter than ours.
There have been over 410 Leapyears since Ceazar started it, making this year 2013, making last year 2012. Good game Mayans, but I think logic wins.
