    Default ReactOS

Anyone ever check out this OS? It's still in Alpha but its supposed to be an OS compatible with Windows binary files. It's pretty sick how far they've come.

I don't seem to understand the point besides it being a legal free version of windows XP.

Yeah you'd think they'd be pretty close to matching the windows kernel but I guess not. They might just have a small team or something.. compared to windows that has hundreds of people. So development time would be slow.

I was looking into this a few years ago, and at that time it was a very small team working on the project in their free time.

What they should make is an OS that can open both windows and mac files :P
Thus creating the least secure OS in the woooorrrlldddd!!! >

haha, anyway it is a great effort but by the time it is released windows 8 will take the stage.

Then maybe Windows SOME_OTHER_FREAKING_CLEVER_NAME_HERE will be better after Windows 8.

It seems to go in a pattern.

I know the pattern but Windows 8 on youtube isn't what it is! You can turn that "box" crap off and make it look like windows 7 with the functionality of a rewrite.

I've heard the Windows 8 is going to be alot faster than Windows 7, especially on older hardware. You can also hide the Metro panel off by pressing Win+M, but if you turn off Metro you're left with your desktop and no start button.

I must have read an article who's author didn't know what he was talking about then. I read up on it and I guess you can still switch back to the Windows7 menu, but you have to change a registry key.. which is pretty stupid considering half the people with a windows PC don't even know what the registry is.

That's only in the developer build Microsoft have confirmed there will be an option in the Control Panel in the final build to revert back to the "old" Win7 start menu

the whole GUI on windows 8 is done over the windows vista / 7 UI so you just turn it to 0 instead of 1 in the registry and it shuts off

on top of that it has MSE built in it seems or at least a good chunk of it, it's a bit lighter weight than windows 7 is too I've ran it quite a bit it seems to be promising

Yeh Development on that project is really slow, I checked it out in 2007, back then It didn't work on native hardware and your filesystem had to be FAT16 meaning no partitions greater than 2GB. It's progress is slow, so by the time they get it stable maybe Microsoft will be doing Windows X :P Maybe, just Maybe.
