    Default DTM questions

Currently working on a revamp of my cut_and_burn script using DTM's.

    Here is the scenario:
I screenshot my inventory, and cut and pasted the various things I needed to make DTM from.
    a log, and a tinderbox.
I loaded the bitmaps into the DTM editor, and saved as string.
    It works!
Now I made this on world 73. I saved my script went home to test and nothing works!
DO DTM's change? or do the images they reference change?
How do you make a DTM work on all worlds?
    or..
why did my DTM work only for a little bit?
I set the tolerance on them to 200... should it be lower?
Was going to realese the next version of my cutter, but it only works for a little while, then I have to re-setup the DTM, why?
    any pointers?

Some colors do not change. Some colors do change. If you want to do DTMs of items in your inventory, you should select points that don't change, so that it will be the same across different worlds.

One good strategy is to pick the black 'outline' of objects, since this color never changes. If you use those points the color tolerance for each point can be set to zero.

There is a DTM tutorial that explains how to do this.

Yes the tuts are what pushed me in this direction. I understand the black outline, but what about the parent?
Take the tinderbox for example, it has a brown center, grey sometimes white around the brown.
Do you set tolerence as high as possible always on the parent?
Do you center the black outline when selecting the points from the parent?

You don't necessarily NEED a parent dot in the center of the object. A parent dot in the center is helpful because it allows you to click at the DTM coordinates instead of having to add an offset each time. But there are some items with the same fixed black outline color near the middle, so you could use the same color for all the dots if you wanted. The only other way it helps is to distinguish items of similar type. So, if you want to count coal versus iron versus mithril, a colored parent dot lets you do that.

If you don't need to distinguish different item types, then you can pick any color near the center for the parent dot and add a bunch of tolerance. 50 should be more than enough, but you can set it as high as 255 if you want.

The point placement around the edge doesn't matter too much. Just scatter 5 or 6 points around the edge and make sure that the color is 65536 for all of them.

As an alternative, you can use bitmaps or bitmap masks to do the same thing if DTMs aren't working.
